Of course it's real. But this nation isn't as wealthy as people say it is... we're an empire built on debt. We need to get out of all these foreign entanglements (aid, wars, etc. all of it), not get sucked deeper in.
Overall, I agree, but in the case of a neighboring country in which we're economically intertwined by a trade agreement - whatever focus we put into remedying Mexico's economic woes would be money worth spent, especially in comparison to spending billions of dollars in tightening up the border.

Sure, throw more money at it. Not enough that we throw billions each year at it as it is. I've read reports not long ago that the best faring nations in Africa, for example, are those that receive the fewest aid dollars. Seems to help folks focus on standing on their own feet rather than hopelessly sliding into dependency and it doesn't leave corrupt regimes billions of dollars to waste on arms and such #######. There's some convincing arguments out there for limiting the direct financial aid to many developing nations - odds are they might be better off without it. Come to think of it, this might just work for Mexico too. Of course, billions go south year after year not as foreign aid but via Western Union building dependencies. Those dollars while maybe affording folks some luxuries of short term benefit stifle many people's ability to stand on their feet and get back to the basics. ;)

I think both of us are on the same side with regard to corporations' heavy hand in changing local economies into these volatile 'free markets'. We essentially threw at Mexico a free market model thinking that the market would fix their economy. What it did was concentrate wealth into a few hands. South America wasn't riddled with pro-communist movements out of thin air. Economic disparity has a long history in the region and stabilizing Mexico's economic through fair trade that supports the smalls businessman and farmer would go a long way towards helping our own self interests.

Good, we can send our illegals to Argentina!

Just please don't send them to the capital city because it's like a sardines can in here! :innocent:

Just like in any other country, illegals come here to do the jobs that the locals don't want...it's the basic rule, if there's demand= there's offer....no demand= no offer.

My innocent opinion is that if no one employed illegals (in Argentina, Chile, or the US), then they wouldn't have a reason (or the means) to stay in a place where they don't belong.

Mass migrations have historically been driven by economics. There's just no way getting around the cause and effect. Some people think dumping heavily subsidized agriculture on small family farms in exchange for economic opportunity is a good thing - they call it progress.

That's not new or specific to Mexico. The European Union has had a common agricultural policy for decades.
