Lack of receiving Social Security number before filling out AOS documents

Hello all,

My fiancé applied for a Social Security number soon after arriving into the US on the K1 visa. After arguing with the offices and letting out a few tears in frustration, the application was  begrudgingly sent by the social security offices in paper form (they didn't believe he was allowed a Social Security number on a K1 visa despite following/ bringing all documents showing he was able to get one). However, it's been 8-ish weeks since we sent in the application and we haven't heard anything. Now, we just got married and his k1 expires in 9 days and we are attempting to gather his AOS documents quickly. On the EAD, for employment, it asks if he would like to be issued a Social security number and asks for his current on one (if any) on the  I-485. What is the protocol for this situation? Do i check that he would like to receive a number or is it a problem that we have that form already sent out but its not yet been processed? Additionally, if it matters, he took my last name post marriage so he would need to get a reissued card with his new name at some point.

Thanks for any advice in advance.
