"how the administrations use food to unify communities and bridge the divide with other cultures"

This is a perfect illustration of how media gaslights people.

First, they casually infer a "divide with other cultures". What cultures? What about American culture? It's the sort of moronic matter of fact statement facilitating the rest of this bait that deserves challenging.

Second, how the President feeds himself and his family in the White House means absolutely nothing.

But by combining these elements, they create stimulus attachments we know from operant conditioning, Pavlov's Dog, for example, and this very thing is but a microcosm of how the media have gaslighted people into believing literally everything Trump does is awful, even when he does nothing at all. They can pair Trump with any neutral stimulus to make it seem awful, and completely be validated when the readers in their target demographic just uncritically accept what they're saying as fact. 😂

Of course, why should they not behave in this fashion, when their readers demonstrate that the confirmation bias fix is precisely what they want. No reason to be ethical when you've got a barrel full of fish to shoot.

I love how the chef who hasn't been invited to cook for Trump says "it's a loss for everyone". More like his bank account, lol.

This example is how they facilitate imprinting that negative connotation.

If the left invoked critical thinking, they'd go, "well, when anyone makes a different purchase decision, you could say the people they chose not to do business with anymore, it was a loss for them". In economics its called an opportunity cost, simplest thing to understand, and it occurs every day when we make comparative choices of how to value our money and time. The choice we chose not to do, could be viewed from that choice's perspective=a loss, and for us, a loss of potential gain from that alternative. Apparently that's news now, because orange man bad.

Obviously did not read the same article the rest of us did

Is this where you extracted the part about the current president is divisive on the issue of food?

"The New York Times reports that while Obama's White House often featured local chefs, the Trump administration no longer prioritizes that effort.

Victor Albisu, a local chef who owns the Poca Madre and Taco Bamba restaurants and who used to cook at the White House for both Obama and George W. Bush, said to The New York Times, “I have not cooked for anybody in the administration. It’s a polarizing time for people, and a table full of food and drinks is the place to put aside those differences. I think this has been a net loss for everyone"

So this part doesn't lead one to see a slight political bias in the story?  Btw, who cares how, where or what the President eats?

While the White House kitchen cooked up Brussels sprouts and shakshuka (an egg-based Moroccan dish) under Obama's eye, according to the outlet, it now churns out meatloaf and ice cream for the president.

If this wasn't meant as a hit piece on Trump, then why was it written in the first place?

People observe the cultural trends that originate from the Whitehouse. The Kennedy's were fashion trend setters, Ronald Regan brought Jelly beans back. This is interesting to people and if it is a good idea, it may take off.

I like a good meatloaf and

shakshuka was famous in America in the 40s because it was Rick's signature dish in Casablanca and foodies have begun to revive retro food. There is no political agenda in the food, it is interesting.

No. What I am saying is that people need to take a deep breath and not see an agenda in these things.

It's also self-manipulation. Can see the overt effort to convince themselves that this is an unbiased piece about the way Presidents eat/"cultural trends". 😂

NB, I think the article is actually saying something a little bit different. It's not saying his choices are divisive, but the article does smack a little bit of food-snobbery, something I think we'd see here on the forums as we gush about fancy alcohol and pencils compared to the dreck we mere peasants enjoy. Of course us peasants know that meatloaf is a very excellent foodstuff, and can be made fancy if you want it. My meatloaf (gama's reciepe) is beloved, and for those seeking a fancy version I know of a local place that you can have by candlelight and with whatever alcohol suits your delight. Ice cream is nonsensical to be a snob about though, because I don't think there is anyone on earth that would dislike it.

The second feature of the article is making a small point that probably won't be important to most people. The WH used to be somewhat known for featuring local 'high-class' chefs, that could role out much finery and impress international guests and other visitors with a sort of fusion of food-statecraft. To sort of show off that we can do 'fancy' too. A lot of people were bothered by offering honored guests soggy fast food. I tend to think that when you want to have special guests over to your house, you likely aren't going to slap McD's in front of them, vs whatever sort of humble but pleasant meal you could put down.

The third point of the article is food standards in school cafeterias. It's not really something that makes sense in the other topics of the article, but it's something that we as Americans should want to fix. The food is lousy, cheap, and unhealthy. I suspect that kids could get a lot more nourishment from something that was both healthier and tasted better. But increasingly kids are starving, in poverty, and relying on school cafes as likely their only source of food for the day.

To the second point, I had a winemaker friend who had his wine featured at a state dinner in the Whitehouse.

It was important to him and important to the Oregon wine industry as a whole that French wines were not featured. It boosts an important domestic industry that provides jobs, supplier sales and exports.

It is not unlike the next model shoe featured on an athlete. The Whitehouse has and will be an appropriate platform.

I can imagine it would be quite an honor to have your wine chosen for the WH. And it probably would be important to local a winery in the DC/MD area as we take it very seriously. It's a great way to showcase what we can do and boost sales for said product, especially with our fussy alcohol laws.

Something tells me though Mel isn't sitting down to a dinner of burgers every night... so I think the article might be a bit overblown in the emphasis of 'peasant food' choices.

Still President's through the ages have eaten plenty of strange 'peasant food'. I don't think it was remarked about that much.. https://www.delish.com/food-news/g3632/the-us-presidents-all-time-favorite-foods/
