NVC - Joint Sponsor vs. CoSponsor

Hello everyone!

I don't have a high enough qualifying income, so my mother is going to help me sponsor. I am still a student and for now live in a dormitory, so officially I am still at my mother's place of residence. However, I am moving to an apartment near my university in January--does this mean my official residence will change, and since my mother won't share a residence with me, she can't joint sponsor??

If she is a joint sponsor, do I need

a). a way to prove that she's my birth mother

b). a way to prove that we're at the same residence

and if so how do I do this?

Thanks so much ❤️

Sharing a  residence is not a requirement for a joint sponsor eligibility

YMMV

sorry yes, i meant a household member filling out i864a.

my question is, should my mother be considered a "household member" and fill out I864A or be considered a joint sponsor and fill out I864?

Household member needs to share the same residence or be a tax dependent.

i used to be a tax dependent of my mother, does this count?

or, she needs to be a dependent of me?

currently, i am still at the same residence as my mother. in less than a month, i won't be. should i write an explanation of this? should i write my new address down in advance? thank you sooo much!!

"Used to be" does not cut it with any government agency.  Why are you focusing so much on the household member thing?   You were told that it is not a requirement.  Have you researched the requirements of joint sponsor eligibility?

I strongly suggest you do some reading.

Become an A-Student of the I-864 instructions.  There are no cosponsors.  If your mother qualifies as a joint sponsor, that's what she is.  Whether you could combine income does depend on you sharing the same residence, but if she qualifies on her own, to joint sponsor, she completes the I-864 anyway, no matter whether you live in the same household or not.
