I'd like to know if the process may be different in the case of a Judicial Oath Ceremony as far as applying for a US passport is concerned? What other things can I tackle on the same day immediately after the Judicial Oath ceremony?

I heard that the application form for the US passport is available at the time of the Oath ceremony, however I was wondering if I can go online and fill and print the digital form so that I don't have to spend extra time at the location of the ceremony.

You can apply for the passport anytime after you get your certificate of naturalization.

Yes, I am aware of that, but in the specific case of a Judicial Oath Ceremony:

1. Can I do it on the same day assuming that I will get the naturalization certificate on the same day.

2. Can I use a pre-filled form from the USCIS website for the passport application.

Anytime afterwards like Bill&Katya said. I had judicial oath that finished at 12 nn, made photocopies of my naturalization certificate, drivers license etc, and then went to my 315 pm appt at the USPS. I completed and printed out beforehand the DS-11 form that is found at the Department of State website:

Could you tell me more about the process. I didn't know you have to make an appointment at USPS. How is that done? Can't it be done at the same place the Oath Ceremony took place? What about photos? Do we need to carry photos or would that be taken on the spot?

If you could elaborate your experience and everything you did, that would be helpful. Thanks.

Check this website for more info.

Check this website for setting an appointment at USPS with passport or passport+photo services

1) I've read of some oath ceremonies where they also do passport applications. I don't know if yours does it. You can always bring your own photos just in case. Make sure you keep a photocopy of your naturalization certificate before you hand out the orig.

2) Fees - I paid the USPS processing fee using a credit card (because I prefer CC). For the passport application to Dept of State, I had to use personal check bec you cannot use a credit card.

3) I did expedited passport application mailed by 2-day delivery (no choice - I think this is the fastest acc to USPS and if my memory serves me right). Had shipping of passport book back to me by next day morning delivery. One time I thought I lost my old passport in the mail so now I don't like my passport sitting too long somewhere in a USPS facility. Less commute time, the better. Unfortunately there's no tracking number for mailing of both passport card and naturalization cert. Both showed up though in my USPS Informed Delivery digest.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I will be having a name change which is different from my other ID's like Driver's License etc. Do I need to have the name changed on these documents too before I can apply for a passport.

Can I use my current DL with old name and the Naturalization certificate to apply for the passport?

Two requirements for first time passport processing are DL and the orig naturalization certificate, and their photocopies. The orig NC and photocopies will be mailed off. So, yes.

After receipt of passport, go to SS (wait for 10 days after oath acc to USCIS), and then go to DMV. I read somewhere to at least wait a day before going to the DMV.

Good luck!

So from what I read, I understand that we can still provide a copy of our old Driver's License and the Naturalization Certificate will act as proof of our current name and indentity for the passport application.

Once passport is received, then update SSN, then update DL info in that order? Any other things come to mind that need updating?

Why do you need to wait until you get the passport to get a DL and new SS card? Doesn't the naturalization certificate and marriage certificate work to prove identity requirements for SS and DL?

When you apply for passport, you are also providing your original naturalization certificate. So, per my understanding, you will get it back only after passport is issued. Besides, you still need to wait atleast 10 days before going to the Social Security Administration to update things as it may take some time to reflect at their end. That is why I said, after getting passport, update SSN and DL

Are you sure you have to provide the original certificate? I thought you could just make a copy and submit that.

Yes-- unless you applied at a Passport Agency (if I'm not mistaken). Check the US passport processing timelines here at VJ and you can see that the last entered date is the date you received back your naturalization certificate.

If you're not in a hurry and can wait more than 10 days to process your passport, then you can always do the SS first, DL next and then passport last. Why waste the 10 days though? Personally, I want to have my passport as soon as possible so I can put away my NC for good.
