Yep, they take it back at the naturalization ceremony. And now I'll have to wait for my passport to travel. But in case of an emergency, I think they'll issue a passport in 72 hours.

You can use your passport from your country of origin to travel.

If you really need to travel, you will need to postpone your oath ceremony until your travel is completed.  Hopefully, passport production will come back to normal in the next few months.

Why not just use your passport from your country of origin...It is still a valid document.

I can only say this for my case, India does not allow dual citizenship, and I cannot travel with my Indian passport after acquiring US citizenship. The language on the Indian consulate's website seems pretty clear about this.

Because you will not be able to enter the USA since they take your green card from you at the naturalization ceremony.

I'm not sure about this but why couldn't one use his naturalization certificate as proof of citizenship?  I'm familiar with the rules, it just seems extreme that one couldn't reenter with passport of origin (excluding countries that do not allow dual citizenship) and naturalization certificate.

The issue will be at check in with the airlines as well, they won't accept anything short of a passport.

I dont think you can do that. They will not allowed you to come back or go out.

Like my passport I need to have visa fot traveling to Canada since I give away my GC away and wait to US Passport. And If I come back to US I will aslo have to have a visa to enter.

I did a search the issue and it appears that on the way back they will most likely force you to apply for an emergency passport which might take a day or two and one will find himself stranded at a nearby airport while trying to untangle the mess.

It's always been easy for me to travel since and I must admit I take it for granted having an American, European and Argentine Passport.  This is good to know for when my wife becomes an American citizen.  She does have European and Argentine passports but based on what I just learned she would have a hard time returning to the United States if she travelled while waiting for her American passport to arrive.

You have to send your naturalization certificate as evidence of US citizenship when applying for your US passport and it will take the same amount of time for them to send it back to you as it will for the mailing of your new US passport.

Thanks this is helpful. Were you able to ask them why every office in the country has the same processing time (i.e. upto 36 months)

I called today and asked.... the girl had an attitude and said she was aware because she was looking at it on her screen. She could not give me an answer on why but kept insisting that I can inquire since my case was older than 6 mths.

I kept explaining that the system kicked back my inquiry indicating that I was within normal processing but that was wrong because the system has the receipt date as June 2017 so my case had to be before then to successfully get any answers...she kept insisting that I could check it....I'm done arguing with stupid people 😑

You can still use your passport from your country of origin to leave the US. When coming back, make an emergency appointment with the US embassy and request a US passport.

Which office has now been the fastest since the reopening in giving people interviews? Is it still Cleveland? Those 36 months are really scary...

That's true.  However, it could be quite a hassle if you are not staying in the city in which the US Embassy/Consulate is located.  In general, you would need to make an online appointment (whether an appointment is available when you want/need it is another story unless that particular Embassy allows walk-ins), have your passport application filled out on 8.5 X 11 paper, have your US sized passport photo, have your original Naturalization Certificate , and secondary photo identification.  Currently, the embassies are not issuing full validation passports meaning it will be issued only for 3 months.  The cost is $145.  It is not same day service, processing time varies, and most embassies will require it be express shipped to you (an additional cost).  Procedures do vary in each country so make sure to check all details at your country's US embassy website.
