I completed my oath ceremony at the New Orleans field office today. A total of ten people took the oath. No photographs were allowed. It took about 45 minutes – 20 minutes for everyone to go through security and turn in their green cards and N-445s, 15 minutes waiting for someone who had to use the restroom, and 10 minutes for the actual ceremony. Strangely, I was a little sad to turn in my green card - the little card opened up a world of opportunities for me.

There were three other people there for interviews, including a service member. Here’s wishing the very best to all who are waiting.

Why do you have to Turn in your GC???

Do they just take away from you until you get a passport?

Like now in this situation if they tame away your GC and you have to wait 9months to get a passport you can not travel at all??

Yep, they take it back at the naturalization ceremony. And now I'll have to wait for my passport to travel. But in case of an emergency, I think they'll issue a passport in 72 hours.

Oh No! Now it takes more then 6 months to get a passport, so I dont wanna give away my GC and then wait 9 months to go home because its a long wait now.

Did they give u an option to keep it!?

Really? It takes that long to get a passport now? I have a friend who got his right before the pandemic started here and it only took two weeks.

Yes BEFORE pandemic. Now its a huge backlog and it takes looong, so for me its very stupid if they take it at Oath ceremony and You have to wait another 6months to get it

Nope, I did not have that option. Once you're a citizen, you can't use it anyway.

Per news article, they're planning to clear the passport backlog in six to eight weeks.

If you really need to travel, you will need to postpone your oath ceremony until your travel is completed.  Hopefully, passport production will come back to normal in the next few months.
