on the other side of the border it happens too..(this was in the news a couple of years ago) there's a USC from hispanic descent, that happens to have the same name that a mexican druglord, and every fukcin time he goes to Mexico to visit his family, on the way back, is stopped and interrogated, every effin time, even though they know he's a USC, and that he's not related to that person... OMGWTFBBQ.

I'll remind people here that prior to 9/11 the most horrific terrorist act perpetrated on US soil was by a born US citizen. Perhaps all former US Army should also be questioned and detained under suspicion that they may want to blow up a governement building?

Funny...no one ever mentions this. Has it been conveniently forgotten perhaps...since it was committed by a US Citizen?

um, that same individual had a less than stellar military career too ;)

This is just appalling. "Do you know Osama bin Laden?" Honestly, what the hell kind of response would you hope to get out of that? "Yes, we're having tea this afternoon."

Indeed - it's a little too extreme to be an exaggeration, so unless the guy is blatantly lying - which reasonably speaking, there's no reason to suppose - I don't doubt his word.

ok, maybe not..

and ppl saying that you can't take his word that they actually asked him "do you know Osama bin Laden" is completely rude, ridiculous and aggravating on its own.

Would it be different for you all if it was an American citizen saying that he was accosted at a border in an arab country? Would you believe him on his word as opposed to this guy?!

no i would not! people exaggerate and untill i see something that coberates the statement, its just hearsay.

Should every Italian be searched and detained at the border for being Italian and connected to the mob? Should every Irishman be detained for maybe being connected to the IRA? Or every Russian because ya just never know, they may be a pinko commie? Or or or...?

if they fit the profile for possibly creating a problem in the US, yes. stop them and search them.

1) the quote about knowing bin laden was only repeated by El-Kasem, only his word that it was asked, what's the likelyhood of that being exagerated? pretty darn high, they probably asked if he knew muslims extremists in canada.

2) again we only have El-Kasem's word as to what questions he was asked. what is the likelyhood that the screeners asked him if he believed that christians have the right to believe in God and not Allah? in many Muslims minds that would equate to the question of "do you believe in God or Allah?" untill i see a transcript of the actual questions ask, i'll take his statments as hearsay.

3)El-Kasem is NOT a US citizen nor a LPR therefore he does not get the protections under the law for freedom of religion. if he does not wish to be scrutinized in this way, he has a choice not to come to the US.

4) crusades were hundreds of years ago and world war II was over 60 years ago. not like we've seen the christians or germans comit acts of terrorism in the last 20 years in the US.

5) either all muslims are brothers or they are not. if they are not, then the muslims should not have problem turning over terrorists, if they are, then they shouldn't have problem with the fact their brothers have garnered muslims the title of world terrorists.

Someone with some common sense. Most developed countries including Canada have various forms of profiling.

I am not surprised people are taking the word of one person. It's a cultural thing and even happens on a smaller scale with children in the US; where a parent will actually question a teacher based on the word of a 8 year old..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

How do they really know he is a dentist.. Anyway that means jack to customs officers as they are there as a first line of defense for the country, not as customer service agents. Customs officials are required to take everyone's word with a grain of salt. They are not sub-prime mortgage lenders..

Interesting to see how the same people who condemn such interrogation kicked up a storm about certain sept 11 terrorists being allowed through from Canada.. How do we know he was not cocky or rude to them. Thousands of people with Muslim beliefs pass through US customs daily without an issue..

immigration is a privilege.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

His claims are very specific - its hard to see how they could be exaggerated. If they're untrue its seems to me that he would have to be lying outright. On that basis I'd be willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, rather than call him a liar.

Its not like you'll ever hear directly from the DHS about it - its a stone-faced, monolithic government department that, like many US government departments, deals with issues in-house and goes out of its way to protect its employees. I've gone through US POE's enough times to know that the DHS and the TSA has its share of bad/rude employees.

Some of the rudest immigration officials I have spoken to have been in the UK and AUS. DOHS is not a customer service oriented agency. While training would go a long way, in todays world they should ask, "what the ###### are you doing here..."
