Hello! I am unsure of where to put this question so I will put it here! Please move if necessary.

I arrived in St. Augustine Florida on a K1 visa in late September. When I went to apply for my SSN, the employee taking my application said when I get married and change my last name, I have 90 days from my marriage date to change my Canadian (home country) passport to my married name and bring it back to the SS office for updating. This is the first I had heard of this timeline. Most people say they apply for their AOS with their married name then go back to the office when they get their EAD with the new name.

Any insight here? Changing my passport internationally, as most of you know, is a huge pain and I was hoping to do that one last. I'd been researching the SS process a ton so it was just odd to hear completely brand new instructions. Thanks!

Want to add: Because we're filing for AOS currently, getting a new passport number with the new name while the AOS is pending with the old number seems...not advisable?

I applied for my SSN name change shortly after getting married and only provided my marriage certificate and the actual SSN card with my maiden name on it (this is per SSA personnel's advise). I am located in Pensacola, Florida, by the way.

Personally, I wouldn't want anything changed on my passport while in the middle of AOS but a recent Philippine embassy outreach encouraged me to do it (because of the convenience) and they assured that I will have my old and new passport back in 6 weeks and that's plenty of time before my AOS interview. So that solved my dilemma about messing with my passport.

Anyways, I haven't heard of that timeframe on changing passport name. That felt unnatural because SSA should not have a say on what name is on your passport. If you were granted the SSN in your maiden name, then the marriage certificate should suffice.

Just my two cents.

Thank you for your insight! I was wondering if it was some kind if Florida thing. I repeated his instructions back to him to make sure I was understanding correctly and that is definitely what he told me to do. It also kind of seemed like he'd never processed an application for someone with a K1 visa before, which is why I'm doubting the instructions. Getting my SSN has been difficult from the beginning... it took Homeland Security 6 weeks to update my arrival info in their system!

Yeah they are full of it at the SSA and the Philippines consular outreach. It is taking longer for the passport and did you do the ROM?

Sorry to hear about your experience. I was lucky enough to meet an SSA personnel that knows what she's doing. I was able to get all my SSA affairs (application and name change) done fairly quickly despite getting a 'mismatch' in the beginning.

Yeah, I was there for ROM and then the personnel suggested that I do the passport renewal too to reflect my new name. It was a fairly easy process and I already got the requirements ready so I did it.

That's good though but their timeline for passport renewal is alittle generous

Yeah... But I think I'll be fine. I only filed AOS in September. I don't have any travel plans and I got my drivers license already so I can walk around without my passport as an ID.

AFAIK, there's no such deadline.

Anastasia didn't update her Social Security card with her married name until she got her green card (though if we'd known we'd run into some issues at the DMV with her EAD not matching her social security card, even with a copy of our marriage certificate in hand, we would have done that even though it would have meant an extra trip to the SSA), but was able to do so then. And given various issues with getting things done in Russia, she may never update the name on her Russian passport.
