I can handle immigration, but the taxes are kicking my butt..

From reading the instructions on the I-864, I see that one year of the tax returns are required for the interview (with some info here about whether three are required for the interview.)

I'd like to order the copies from the IRS, but there seem to be two options, and I'm not sure which would suffice: the transcript of the return, form 4506-T, which is free and also attainable by calling an 800 number, or form 4506, which seems to be an actual copy of the actual return, and a fee is associated.

Through my employer/school, I can get a copy of my W2s very easily.

Which route suffices for the I-864? Free or pay? And who writes instruction for the IRS? People who got kicked out of USCIS for making their sentences too unclear?

I used the free ones. That seemed to be sufficient. Once they got this, our case was transferred to CSC. You might get to be one of those that gets transferred too. Best wishes. :)

They actually prefer the transcripts.
