Greta Thunberg, time traveller?

Could Greta Thunberg be a time traveller sent from the future to save humanity from the unfolding climate crisis? A cadre of Twitter users seem to think so, after the photograph of a young Klondike goldminer bearing a striking resemblance to the Swedish activist was discovered this week.

The now viral 1898 image of three children operating a goldmine in Canada’s Yukon territory is part of a sprawling collection by the documentary photographer Eric Hegg. Near the end of the 19th century, the Swedish American captured some of the most iconic images of people hoping to make their fortunes in the rugged north.

   Probably not. The first thing all time travelers learn is not to get caught on camera. The second thing learned is if and when you do mess up, you go further back in time and fix the first mistake. Eventually, there is never any evidence.

 

   Seriously though, when you are part of a relatively homogeneous population (and most of us are), there will be many people who look similar. Happens to most people sooner or later. Any decent conspiracy theorist should remember Occam's razor still generally applies.

Agreed. We shouldn't be giving innocent children this kind of attention or clout for adult issues. Send the poor child back to school and ground her if she skips another class.

I don't believe that concerns about climate change are solely the preserve of adults. How would you feel if your child (I assume you have children from your other posts) felt very strongly about something that you classified as an "adults only" (I exclude pornography/sexual content) topic, and had intelligent and inspiring things to say? Would you tell that child that he or she could not speak publicly until the child was of age? My parents always encouraged us to speak our minds freely and without fear. I'm not saying that I agree with all the tactics that Thunberg has used, but I do think speech, and as much of it as we can get, is a good thing.  

 

But attacking a child's appearance is crass. Dare I say it's bullying?

If someone tells them it is offensive, they should reflect on why it could be offensive to others and modify their words accordingly. See, I mean, looking at that other thread, I think there were ways of getting across the message I think he was aiming at without expressing it in a way that was clearly offensive to others. A lot of it is framing. On the other hand, patently racist/sexist/bigoted speech isn't something I'd encourage in my children, if I have any.

Anyhow, I see no reason to go easy on someone who comes to my country and province in the middle of an election and tries to convince people to destroy an industry that's put food on this family's table. If she wants to play adult and try to affect my life as an adult and provider for my children, face the music as an adult. While invoking the simultaneous arguments that we should listen to Greta like an adult, and at the same time she's off limits to mockery for her crazy views because of her age, might work in the identity politics circles, it doesn't work anywhere else.

I completely agree.  If it is her decision to do this, she cannot hide behind her age to avoid criticism.

I've yet to see Greta hiding behind her age, it's the SJWs parading her around.. "look at this girl get upset, she agrees with our hysteria, now give us our way!". I'm not sure whether to laugh or be disturbed or both. But it's part of this greater entitlement behavior illustrated by those on the left part of the spectrum where they try and find something they think will easily contribute to getting their way, wield it like a weapon, and bludgeon people with it, and get mad if people don't capitulate. 

 

The intellectual infancy of this is inherent with the method itself. No one should take it seriously, if it weren't for the fact that there are actual adults trying to use this as a guide for policy.
