Hybrids definitely do better in the city, particularly with congestion, stop and go traffic, etc. The electric engine kicks on at slower speeds, or when at a stop, taking stress off gas. Then kinetic energy from braking recharges it to be used for future electric engine hybrid assist. This cycle is basically fueled entirely by city driving. When on the highway, braking is used less, so doesn't recharge hybrid battery much, so basically all ICE mileage, which is why hwy mileage closely resembles non-hybrid versions.

It's called regenerative braking :) . Honestly I had a prius and currently drive a RAV4 hybrid. I get better on the HWY in both. several customers report them same. Pulse and glide. Keep in mind that most of the time when the engine is running it charges the battery as well is when you are going down a slope and not accelerating

I am guessing HWY. Of course hybrids are supposed to do better in the city. Its all 2nd hand info right now. The rep really did not want to commit on info, but acknowledged my info was what he heard.

Interesting.  Just drove a bunch of hwy hours/miles.  Top mileage for my Ridgeline was 30.8.  All fossil.

Does the Rav4 hybrid have that annoying engine shutoff at a light?

Not per say. All hybrids engine's cut off when not being used. That feature is on highlander. None use it

Hard to say.. mostly us older people. Just dont like the idea of the engine starting and stopping.  Some customers swear it wears out the starter.  No science behind what I am saying.

I also dont use my auto high beam functionality.  Just want to do it myself. Again no logic to explain why.

Radar cruise I love. Mine is full speed. 0 to top speed. Great on the interstate,  i have used it in stop and go around town. Not my thing.

Another wastrd feature on cars inmho . Paddle shifters

Completely agree on the paddle shifters, my wife’s car has those and they never are used.  I will say I did use them once when test driving an MB CLS AMG.  I have only driven one vehicle with auto high beams and I grew to like it.  I am also a big fan of front cameras when pulling in the garage.  As to Start/stop, initially, I did not like it, but over time it was fine.  Overall, it makes sense, why burn fuel when sitting at a light for a few minutes.

Now one newer feature I am starting to see is camera mirrors.  My wife’s car has that option for the rear view mirror, and it looks surreal when using it.  She doesn’t use it at all, I do use it the few times I drive her car just so she doesn’t have to adjust the mirror next time she drives.  I have been hearing that carmakers are looking to make all the mirrors camera based in the future.

My RAV has an option so that you can use the rearview like a camera if something is in the back blocking your view

My wifes  RAV has the birds eye view feature. I love it when pulling into parking spots etc. One feature I really like is the blind spot monitors in the side mirrors. I also like the rear cross traffic, that alerts me if I am backing out of a spot and a vehicle is coming.

A lot of manufactures are going to this.

The next big thing coming in safety is V2V technology.  Cars will communicate with each other

I love all the "nanny features" my truck has.  One I wish it had is ACC that takes you down to a complete stop, then starts moving again when the car ahead does.  Mine works down to about 22 mph, then kicks off.  Auto brights, ACC, lane keep assist (works around corners without steering input from me, too!), auto braking... I love them all.

Sounds boring.

The full speed ACC or Dynamic Radar in most cars usually kicks in around 30. The 0 to full speed is fairly new. To be honest its a little unnerving in city traffic. It works but brakes a little late for my taste. I am guessing the newer Ridgelines  have it or will have it. Yours is a 18 or 17?

2017.  Mine doesn't brake too late at all.  I have my distance set on the closest one.  If I use the farthest setting, it brakes too early for my taste.  In fact, if I see a vehicle turning ahead, I find that auto-braking comes on too early most of the time, so I override it with the gas pedal because I can mo betta detect that the vehicle ahead will be out of my way.   ACC cannot do that very well.

I think I first saw the down-to-zero coming out of Nissan.

And very safe.  I like safety when I am driving.

and that's why I got MJ every thing I could get. The birds eye really helps her park. She does not do a lot of driving. Pretty much to work and back.

One thing mine has I dont care for is Lane Trace. When you have the Cruise on it keeps you centred in the lane. I was telling the Rep this week at times it fights  steering inputs. It will however keep you centred going around curves. Unnerving when you track to the right right and and it adjusts you back left with a semi beside you.

Honda calls it LKA - Lane Keep Assist.  It takes a bit of getting used to, and it tends to fail when the painted lines fade, but I like it.  The force required to override it is nil.  But it has saved my bacon more than once when I was heads-down in the car going into a curve.  The shaking of the wheel plus the proper steering inputs are nice.  Sucks that it doesn't last very long.  Not sure HOW long exactly, but if I ignore the STEERING REQUIRED command, the truck slows 5 mph, hits the right line, shakes the wheel, then repeats the process until LKA kicks off around 22 mph.
