Does SSA require original docs?

Sorry if this is a repeat question - I did a quick search and couldn't find it. My naturalization certificate is sent off with my passport application. Can I take a copy of it to the SSA office to update my SSN, or do I need to wait for the passport /original to be returned before going in?

I don’t think the original is required, but I do not know for certain.

the post office will copy and stamped the copy as seen and witnessed so if you have not already sent the original in,  you don't have to

SS accepts either

you also need to take another form of photo ID like driving license

and

form SS-5

best to do in person but can be mailed

Do you need to make an appointment with your local social security office? What documents do you need to take? How long does it take? Can you visit the DMV the next day or do you need to wait for a few days? My legal name is changed on my US passport. Thanks much

You can do walk in with no appointment to your local SSA office, you will need the original naturalization certificate, the new card will be about 7-10 days in the mail, You can visit the DMV with your passport to do the name change on your driver license.

I went in today, they didm't take the copy. They asked for the original.

For paper documentation i.e. birth certificates, name change, naturalizations, you need the original certified document.   How else are the to know it is a true copy?

Why do you need a new card? I don’t have any restrictions listed on mine. Or did you change your name?

i presume passports will do as proof of usc, that’s all I have for my kid. her passport is finally arriving today so I can update her ss too.

I dont have a name change as well when I updated my status but they sent a new card to me with the same name and SSN number.

I think that is their standard procedure for any changes on your SSN records whether name change or status, because on SSN card there is date when they processed your SSN card whether new, name change or status update, it's an indication that is something change on your records and the last time you visited and requested to update your records.

I know there's a lot of confusion about this but that's how it works, even me myself ask them why they are sending a new card since I'm already updating my immigration status and that was the response I got from SSN employee.

Ok. Well I tried to go into the SSA office one day and saw the waiting room from hell, so I decided to wait till I had both passports to go in so as to only fight the queue once. I’ll try again next week. Urban legend has it many people don’t realize SS offices are now open Wednesday afternoons and that that is the best time to go. I may give it a shot lol, will report back if it works!

Dont let the size of the waiting room deter you. From my experience the SSA office usually has a self service touchscreen computer for intake. It gives you several reasons to choose from for why you are here. It will print you out a ticket with a letter and number and then you wait for it to be called. It might be A23 or D46 or something like that. Depending on the letter different people at different windows handle specific letters. So there can be a ton of people all waiting with D tickets for speaking to someone about benefits and very few people waiting with A tickets to do name change. I would at least go print out a ticket and see if you are A23 and they are only on A10 before walking out.  You can always give them back the ticket and let them know you are not able to wait.

I left after waiting 10 minutes and was still in the line for the touchscreen kiosk... but I do take your point that it might not be as bad as it looks

interestingly I checked listed opening times; google and the first websites that come up all have the SS office closing noon on Wednesday, but the actual SSA site has it open till 4. I might try that trick.

The best time for me was arriving 1 hr before closing time. No more people! My first attempt was arriving at 930 am and the waiting room was already full. They say people line up outside even before opening hours.

They also sent me a new card even though I didn't ask for one.
