Medical Records - Absolutely Distraught!

Hi all,

I am going through the K1 visa process, and I ordered my summary of medical records from my GP. These arrived today, and have a few things on there, listed as "ongoing" that are quite distressing.

I went through an abusive relationship and very stressful job from January 2017 to August 2018. I spoke to my GP about the following in between those dates, and the following appear on my records as ongoing.

1. Suicidal thoughts (May 18) - I was working back to back 17+ hour days. The records do note that I am aware of my triggers, have referred myself for counselling and I stated that I would never act on these thoughts. These ended after a few days, but are listed as ongoing on my medical records.

2. Assault / domestic violence (July 18). It goes into detail on how my ex choked me one day. I broke up with him immediately after, and started dating my now fiance in Nov 18, but the domestic violence is tagged as ongoing.

My major concerns are the suicidal thoughts being on there at all. How will that impact our visa application? Also the fact that the domestic violence is listed as ongoing (coinciding with my current relationship!!) I don't want the immigration officers to get confused with my ex and current partner.

Thanks in advance for any help.

First, take a deep breath.  None of what you have mentioned sounds to me like a barrier to getting a visa.  In fact, you will be having an entirely new medical exam at Knightsbridge before your interview.

Now, to address the issues:  what have you been doing in terms of therapy to help with your past trauma as a victim of domestic violence? Still attending counseling as needed?  My guess is that the "ongoing" refers to how it affects you, rather than the relationship violence itself.

In terms of the suicidal ideation, it sounds to me like it was a case of situational depression related to your life at that moment.  Do you still feel that way?  The fact that you never had a 'plan' in place is good.

Can you return to the same GP, or even maybe a mental health practitioner to have your record updated to reflect the progress you have made since 2018?  Having a health care professional attest in writing to the fact that you are not at risk of doing harm to self or others would be good.
