Hi All,

Could someone please give us some advice. My husband (american) and I (UK) got married in Scotland. After our marriage we requested the marriage certificate from the registras office and that was what we sent in our I-130 application. We just received a RFE saying that we submitted an extract marriage certificate as evidence of our marriage and that cant be used for bona fide marriage. They need the copy of timely registered complete marriage certificate...

I called the registra in Scotland and explained this and they said what they sent us (although it says "extract of an entry in a register of marriages" at the top of the page) is in fact the marriage certificate.

Has anyone else had this issue from the UK? I have no idea what else we are meant to provide as i'm being told from our registra office that that is a marriage certificate.

Please help :(

I think they are looking for some kind of certification stamp or seal which is typical on most American records with a signature of the county clerk  by some words saying I certify this is an exact copy of the records of XYZ county.

I would send it back and say-- I believe this request is in error because in the country of Scotland, the document included called "------------------------" is the only marriage certificate provided by the National Records of Scotland located in Edinburgh. Please see the attached ordering instructions that state the marriage certificate is also called an official extract.

Then include this printed out https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/files//registration/leaflet-s2-2019.pdf

with yellow highlighting on the words

How to order a certificate (also known as an official extract)

I concur, it's the same for a divorce document and for a birth certificate, both stipulate they are extracts, I got an rfe on my K-1 for my divorce decree asking for a certified certificate.  I just sent the same document with words to the same effect as Wuzopo stated and links to the scots.gov site as well

Thank you both! I had the extract of marriage certificate apostilled ( may have not needed this but oh well), and will send the apostilled document with the above statement!
