Using Medi-Cal for new immigrants in California

Hi,

I am a self-employed contractor and my immigrant wife just came into the country.

I am looking to either buy medical insurace for us, or put both of us on Medi-Cal.

Medical insurance in California is very expensive.

Are people actually being denied for using Medi-Cal at the removal of conditions stage?

According to CoveredCA website:

Both lawfully present and not lawfully present individuals can apply through Covered California to see if they are eligible for a health plan through Covered California or Medi-Cal. There is no “waiting period” or “five-year bar.”

Thanks for your advice.

Your wife can’t use a governmental insurance. What have you been doing for insurance? Insurance is expensive, yes, but it’s your responsibility to pay for it, not the tax payers. To be blunt; You chose to bring her here-not us. You, as an American, can go on welfare but your immigrant wife can not.

simce you don’t have a timeline I’m unsure of how your wife arrived here but you most likely completed an affidavit that stated she wouldn’t become a public charge...

I can only say that I have not come across anybody on VJ who has had an issue and I assume there are many who do use Medical.

But the public charge is only for FEDERAL programs, not state.

https://www.uscis.gov/greencard/public-charge

" Medicaid and other health insurance and health services (including public assistance for immunizations and for testing and treatment of symptoms of communicable diseases; use of health clinics, short-term rehabilitation services, and emergency medical services) other than support for long-term institutional care "

" State and local programs that are similar to the federal programs listed above are also generally not considered for public charge purposes. "

The 'public charge' rule is so watered down that its near useless.

My self-employed income is unpredictable.

It's running low this year, so Covered CA assigned me to Medi-Cal.

I thought Medical was a name for a variety of programmes that are a State Fed mix or just State.
