My husband is unable to apply for any jobs people are setting him up for, nor job fairs, because he doesn’t have his SSN. For those who recently received your EAD, how long did it take for you to get your SSN and is there anyway to get the number even without receiving the card immediately?

We were in the same situation. So we called the local SS office and got an appointment to get him a SSN. I had called USCIS and spoke to an officer and he advised to do this as well. It looks like it was an error that they didn’t send over his information to SS.

Is there a way to confirm if he was forgotten, or we would have to wait to see if something shows up? Like if we call the SS office, will they be able to confirm if he even has a SSN on record?

After I waited over a week since we received The EAD, I called the SS office. They did a search and could not find him in the system. They did a name and DOB search. That is when I called the USCIS and spoke with an immigration officer (who was very kind). He said that it happens sometimes where they end up not sending the info to the SS office. So he suggested to go directly to the SS to get one issued.

So my local SS is only doing appointments for special cases. Since I advised them that my husband needs his SS to work they considered that priority and made me an appointment within a week of my call. We went to the appointment today and it was very quick and easy.

Thanks! Our offices are closed so we can only mail it in. I wish the USCIS would send something stating that they didn’t file the paperwork. If it wasn’t for the forum, we would have just been waiting blindly. They said it will take up to 3 weeks because they now have to confirm his status with the USCIS office. Thanks so much for sharing. This place has been beyond helpful throughout this whole process from even doing the visitor’s visa first time around. Blessings to you and hopefully we will hear back sooner than later. Best wishes for a speedy process for you all as well.

Hi there.. it’s good to hear that they accommodated your request.. did you get the SSN today as well? I am also trying to make an appointment with the SSA office.. not having an SSN has been a nightmare for me really.. can’t get a job, can’t get added to my husband’s bank accounts, can’t get a driver’s license, and I’m receiving mails from my husband’s health provider almost every week to send them my SSN.

No, we asked and they said they do not have the actual number. The card will be here in a week or so. I am just happy to know it is being processed.

Hi guys, need your help / advice... I already have my EAD under my married name, and no SSN. I finally was able to talk to a supervisor from the SSA office and she agreed to make an in-person meeting this coming Friday, June 19. My question is, should I apply the SSN under maiden or married name? I tried checking my records on the SAVE database, all I can find was my passport which is of course under my maiden name.. do you know which option I should choose to enter my EAD number so I can check if it’s already in the system ? EAD / combo card was issued a month ago... thanks !

If I am not mistaken, the name on your SS card should be your “official” name that you want. So if you want to go by your married name put that. If you want to go by your maiden name, you put that.

When my current husband and I got married, my last name (which was still my ex-husband’s last name) was not officially changed until I changed it at the social security office. Then I had to use the new SS card to get my driver’s license changed and my name changed at work.

Thank you! I just wonder if I would encounter problems if I use my married name ( with the SAVE database, since passport and I-94 were both under my maiden name, if that’s still what the SSA would be using to verify my records..  )... I don’t wanna be put in manual verification..

They only look at the SAVE database for your initial  SS card. Are you talking about changing your last name to your current married name? You do already have a SS card right? If you do you only need your current marriage license and EAD or GC to change and or correct your SS card. If this was your initial  SS card then you are correct you'd have to use the name on the I94 if you applied  at the SSA office.

Hi Sarge, Nope, no social security number yet.. yeah, that’s kind of what I thought - that I need to use the name on the I-94 for initial request..
