Being married to a Nigerian,  I can tell you that the customary wedding is as legal as the registry wedding. The USA look at it as being legal.

It requires going through the process of a divorce. I had a registry wedding (white wedding) and I had the privilege of having a customary wedding as well.

Remember, even if you have a customary wedding (your husband) still have to register the ceremony with the international government committee.  I can't find my card with the actual name of it.

You need to have proof of divorce or affidavit to prove your marriage is void. I knew a person that married  at a customary wedding and she left her husband.  He registered the wedding and she never sent for him. He obtained help from a agency and she is paying him support.

Hope this helps.

I think it should b posted on a Nigeria forum or smtin, i dont knw how dis site works but i tink only Nigerian will understand d customary marriage thin.

I saw one last week from India get denied for same thing... USCIS doesn’t recognise customary divorce and therefore wouldn’t recognise legal marriage to usc.. they had to go get a formal degree and are now trying to work out if legally able to get married a second time before starting the visa process all over again

You will need to get a divorce, because to the eyes of the embassy traditional marriages is still seen as legal marriage.
