Its a good thing theydecided to drop that damn gaurantor policy they had. However what about those not residing in Canada? will they still need a guarantor like before or can they just get a family member (Canadian Citizen) to stand as a guarantor? any ideas anybody?

That's great that they're dropping the guarantor policy. :D But I would be interested in how that'll affect us Canadians who are living outside Canada. Does that mean we're going to be using the long form still? Do we still need a proper guarantor for that? I know it's probably in there, but I didn't get clear info when reading that announcement.

Canadians who meet the following eligibility criteria will be able to benefit from this program:

  • They must be residing in Canada at the time they apply.
  • They must have resided in Canada at the time of their previous application.
  • They were 16 years old or over at the time of their previous application.
  • Their previous passport:

  1. Must have been valid for five years,
  2. Must have been issued after January 31, 2002,
  3. Was never damaged or reported as lost or stolen, and
  4. Must have been issued under their current name.

Looks like those of us in the US have to have a guarantor as we will not be residing in Canada.

Thanks for the link. :)

"On October 1, 2007, Passport Canada will introduce a simpler guarantor policy, which will allow most Canadian adult passport holders to act as guarantors for first time applicants."

Looks like those in the US will lose out in more ways than one.

Under the new system those eligible will only need a guarantor for their very first passport application, so they can use the new, easier, guarantor policy. But those of thus who end up in the US? Can't use the new "renewal" system and also can't use the new "easier" guarantor policy as we would not be considered "first time applicants".

Oh well, at least this is definitely a step in the right direction!

Wouldn't this (bolded) apply to those living here already? Or do Canadians have to meet ALL the eligibilty requirements listed above?

The way they have it down on the website makes it look like all conditions should be met. But it doesn't say anything about Canadians living abroad.

I guess what's so cofusing to me are the first two conditions. Certainly the Cdn government is aware there are Cdn's living abroad. At any rate, it doesn't take much to confuse me these days. :D

Basically the new 'policies' are for canadians who live in canada. Nothing has changed for canadians who live abroad. They are just trying to cut down on 'waiting in line' times and what not for those who continually reside in the country. Every canadian residing abroad, with the exception of the US, can go into a consulate or embassy in the country they are living and have the stuff sent through there. The consulates in the US however are 'resistant' to doing that and hopefully it will change soon and they'll have no choice since it doesn't make sense for the consulate in [insert random state here] to tell people to hop a plane and come all the way to an office in Canada to get it done when there's not enough time to mail it away and receive it back.

Heck I work there and can't even take advantage of the 'new simplified measures' since when I go to re do my passport I'll be changing my name LOL

For all of you STILL waiting for your passport (Sorry didnt want to start a new thread so i posted here):

So i started to freak out because I sent my passport to gatineau in may to add my married name (they dont do that anymore, now you must apply for a whole new passport) and my package was no were near being processed. Everytime i called...i would get the run around. I was freaking out because one lady at passport canada told me that i wouldnt get my passport until mid to late Sept. I was scared that I was going to get an interview date and my passport would still be sitting in a bin somewhere in passport canada's warehouse. I called my MP's office and told them my situation. I had my passport within 2 weeks of the first phone call.

If you are in the same position as i was. CALL YOU MP its worth a try. It worked for me

ya, there was another post where one of our VJ members is an actual Govt employee who works at the passport office and backs up harleytexas

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

How insane! The things we have to do for a passport hahahah. I am not looking forward to renuing mine from the US. I think I might just fly to Canada and stand in line for a day...otherwise its too long of a wait. If mine within canada too 3 months (with the help of my MPs office) imagine how long it will take from the US!!! If you want to go on a trip...i suggest you plan your trip 3 yrs in advance because thats how long it will take for you to get your passport. :P
