As someone who lived in that culture for a dozen years, I can attest it's not easy to be the American who has had the bad form to enter into a marriage with an English trust fund baby. My ex was far from royal, but his parents were of a moneyed class. I was vulgar, awkward and too emotional. I was never going to get it right in the eyes of some. I did try for many years, quietly sucking it up, all the nasty little comments and the biting attacks. When I heard Meghan Markle was marrying Harry, I thought, peace be with her, she's going to get 1,000 times worse than I got. I at least was a private citizen.

and that's your good points.  :P

Thank you, Charles. That's precisely what my non-fiance says to me as well.

Could we stick to the subject, no need to LaLa this one.

My apologies, dear Boiler. No need for ruffled feathers.

I understand that the Duke and Duchess have abandoned their Thanksgiving plans so that they can be in London: https://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1204173/meghan-markle-news-duchess-sussex-prince-harry-doria-ragland-los-angeles-thanksgiving

Well it seemed appropriate as a short version of laylalex.

And Thanksgiving is Murican, not a UK thing.

It's Sunday dinner where hubby is from. I honestly don't know how people can't stand it every week.

Hmmm, lunch is more common.

I miss Sunday dinner (i.e., Sunday afternoon repast). :( Perhaps because I was rarely responsible for cooking it, just eating it. However, I do make a roast beast every month for him indoors using a recipe I got from my former grandmother-in-law -- I use a very fatty tri-tip now because I am an AMERICAN. Still have sprouts though.

Yes, I'm quite aware of that. However, I have cooked several full Thanksgiving dinners while I lived there, including a dinner for 14 in a tiny 1 bed flat we were living in at the time for married student housing. Making pumpkin pie was always a challenge -- one year I found tins of Libby pumpkin pie filling on the shelves of a random shop up in Highgate; I bought them all and we had pumpkin pie every couple of weeks for a few months. I understand such delicacies are more easily obtained these days, but back in the bad old days of the mid-90s, it was nearly impossible to achieve.

His parents made me 'Thanksgiving dinner' during my travels in the UK. Not really different than the Sunday meal, but it was impossible to find the pumpkin filling. Come to think of it I don't think they found the sauerkraut either.

I don't miss the Sunday dinner though..too much food and so heavy. We rarely have it here now, as we're trying to eat healthy, but for Thanksgiving we usually do Yorkshires.. and I would *love* to get ahold of some mushy peas.

I am known here on VJ for my Yorkshire pudding recipe, or at least I used to be. (I have been on here forever, 13 years in February.) I'm an average to competent cook (my mister is the one with the culinary school training, so I let him do the heavy lifting), but Yorkies are my specialty. :D Mushy peas have always been meh for me; fresh ones are another thing altogether -- English peas are the best in the world. And we always called it Sunday dinner -- both the husbands' families did. Mr Maven #1's family was from London, and Mr Maven #2's family was from Norfolk and Gloucester, though he himself grew up in South Yorks. The eventual Mr Maven #3's family is from Tennessee (and Seoul), so feeding there involves a lot of chicken and dumplings, collards, BBQ, fried chicken... I'd rather have the roast beast, please, plus veg.

He will not allow me to make Yorkshires, he *has* to do it exactly as his momma says it must be done and apparently I fret too much about burning them. I did Toad in the Hole though, proud of myself for that one, though the sausages were ridiculously difficult to come by.
