Joint sponsor I-864

What would be the difference in me using my sponsor as just a sponsor or using them as a household member if we do live together is it better to combine the incomes or what? I got confused about that when filing out the I-864.

Incomes cannot be combined for sponsorship purposes.

I know you can do this if the immigrant is your spouse, already in the US and working (legally, of course). We did this with my husband and his AOS, but it wasnt for financial reasons (I made more than enough on my own), but rather to give more evidence to being a bonafide relationship/marriage (also not needed in our case but treated this much like ROC as far as info we provided and figured more was better)

I dont think you can combine incomes with other persons, unless for some reason (maybe) you file joint taxes with them, or possibly are claimed as a dependent on their taxes (ie parent and adult age child.) And even then im thinking you can not, but could be wrong.

Um yes you can combine income. Im not sure why people are saying no? In some cases you can do either a co-sponsor and use a separate 864 OR you can add them as a household member on your 864 and they fill out an 864a. There are conditions that need to be met to be able to be used as a household member including having the same residence and them being a qualifying family member. If they meet the requirements: Example- USC husband, immigrant wife, and USCs mother. Mother and husband live at the same address. So you can do 864 from husband, 864a from mother. Household size would be 3. Combined income has to meet guidelines for 3. OR you can do husband 864 (need to meet guidelines for 2- husband and wife) If he doesnt then mother would file separate 864 as co-sponsor but on it she has to meet guidelines for 2 (her and wife). So you want to look at how the numbers add up to see which works better.

You cannot combine two inadequate incomes to make an adequate income, which is what I thought OP was suggesting he wanted to do, i.e:  "my income is below the FPL, and my joint sponsor's is also, but I'll submit two I-864s, and add the two together."
