Ex-Twitter worker arrested in Seattle is charged with spying for Saudi Arabia

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department has charged two former Twitter employees with spying for Saudi Arabia by accessing the company’s information on dissidents who use the platform, marking the first time federal prosecutors have publicly accused the kingdom of running agents in the United States.

One of those implicated in the scheme, according to court papers, is an associate of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who the CIA has concluded likely ordered the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul last year.

The case highlights the issue of foreign powers exploiting American social media platforms to identify critics and suppress their voices. And it raises concerns about the ability of Silicon Valley to protect the private information of dissidents and other users from repressive governments.

Thanks for posting. The West is at an interesting juncture with many "allies" like Turkey and Saudis. The has been a pull back from liberal democracy for sure in Turkey with Erdogan's approach. MBS had been touted as a champion of reform, but it is apparent that any threat to his power will be dealt with swiftly.

Yes, and why are we seeing an increase in their acceptance in the world the last 5 years?. It's Hungary, Marine Le Pen making inroads, Brazil, Philippines.

Not sure those folks are totalitarians, and in the case of Le Pen, she is not actually leading anything.  Now of course you could have mentioned Xi, Maduro, KJU as well.  A lot has to do with how a country has structured its government, if they put too much power into the top position, then they are ripe for a totalitarian to take over.  I am not too worried about it here in the US, but it does give me pause when I see a lot of so called progressives and leftist attack the Constitution.
