This thread now reminds me of the Dirt thread. You all love to come down on someone for breaking one little rule in the immigration process, but feel completely OK in blowing off this regulation? (or a Customs regulation in the Dirt case).

At our I-751 appointment, the officer advised us that the passport with the new I-551 stamp should be carried at all times in lieu of the card (you have to give up the 2 year card for the 10 year one)

FTR, yes, the DAH carries all the time and has for 3+ years. Another good reason to naturalize!

(oh and yes, he could then safely answer 'no' to the N-400 question 'have you ever committed a crime for which you have not been arrested?')

The US is still a free country (thanks to the Fourth Amendment), which means the INS,

ICE, police, etc. do not have the authority to force an alien to produce evidence of

registration without probable cause, i.e. a reasonable suspicion of illegal activity or

reason to believe that he or she will be unable to do so.

I disagree, but I'm not going to go look it up tonight.. it's almost dinnertime. :)

A Permanent Resident is a guest in the US. I think you'll find that the 4th ammendment does not apply to the TOS a PR agrees to when they sign up.

Hey! Yet *another* good reason to naturalize!

I believe you're wrong on both counts:

  • A permanent resident is NOT a guest in the US (hence "permanent"), and
  • US Constitution (including the 4th Amendment) applies to EVERYONE in the US, citizens and guests alike.

Hey! Yet *another* good reason to naturalize!

Agreed!
