I have thought long and hard about this and I need the help a lawyer can give. First of all, I need the help to organise because I admit I'm a nervous wreak and I feel a lawyer will prevent the little mistakes that turn into disasters. It just seems that you get a little peace of mind is all.

My question to those who have "recently" used a lawyer can you give me a round figure of what you paid, please? I know it's a very personal question but it would help me tremendously when I go on Monday to see this lawyer and he asks for an amount. I would like to know if it falls in with what others are paying.

Thank you. :)

Don't worry. You will find all the info and advice you need right here.

When I started this process I knew less than nothing. Finding VJ is what helped me.

Unless you have any major problems arise during your process, a Lawyer really doesn't do that much for you.

Well I got a lawyer. I guess it depends on how comfortable you feel doing the paperwork yourself. I got one because I am in the process of moving and I would rather have someone there to take care of things while I am out of touch and getting set up in my new area. I only paid around $700 but so far, so good. He's been there to answer all my questions as well as my fiancee's when she has contacted him as well.

We hired an agency, no lawyer for our k1 petition and they will also

prepare all our AOS forms.

I did not know about VJ at the time and felt overwhelmed with the process.

Cost about $800. Very good job but we were on our own with the embassy part.

Thanks, for all the encouragement it means a lot :) After all is said and done my pocketbook determines what I will do so I might find myself going it alone anyway but it seems like it will slow me down as I learn all this and check, recheck stuff that a lawyer finds second nature

I thought a ball park figure of around $1000.00 not including filing fees would be reasonable. I have never dealt with a lawyer for this and don't want something jumping up and biting me at the end. I think I would ask this lawyer after he quotes his price if this is absolutely the price with no surprises later on. I'll be very firm about that and would expect to see something in writing, of course. I just hate going the lawyer route cause I feel like they can see me coming a mile away but my desire to have my fiance here sooner rather than later overrides any pride.

Sleepy, starting to babble sorry lol

I know exactly how you feel. I hired a lawyer myself. I started out by searching the internet. There are plenty of lawyers offering their services. You pretty much get what you pay for. Some are not lawyers at all, but just services who will fill out the forms for you. I found the average price for a lawyer to be about $1000. The idea of doing it over the internet or through the mail didn't appeal to me so I did an internet search on Immigration Lawyers in the local online yellow pages. Most described their services. Some had people who could translate documents and some didn't. If you went the $2000+ route you could find a lawyer who would even hire someone in the country of the beneficiary to assist with the interview process. I wound up picking the lawyer closest to me. My finacee is from China and they had someone in their office who was Chinese and could help with the translations. Their price was $750 so I went with them. They sent blank forms to my fiancee via DHL for signature and had them back and filled out within a week. I'm very happy with their service. At that time I didn't know about visajourney.com. I guess I could have done it myself but I estimate it would have added 4 to 6 weeks to the process.

I think you should use the money that you going to hire the lawyer, buy some beers, fire up the grill, have some friends over (prefer Visajourney members in your area ) and have a good time, then fill out the form yourself. Lawyer can't really do much here since you are dealing with the USCIS and the consulate, except fill out the form and send it in for u. The forms are very straight forward, if you have any question you can post it in here and all these great members will answer your question in hours or even minutes....good luck to you....

I got a lawyer and she charged me $3,000 (not including inmigration fees). For my fiancé and her two beautiful boys.

She said it was $750 for each child (K-2) and $1,500 for my fiancé (K-1)

Now that I know... the only reason that I can suggest a lawyer is, if you have had "problems" with the law before... other than that... forget it!

I can honestly tell you now, that if I were in the same situation you are now... I wouldn't done it!!!

With VisaJourney you don't nedd no lawyer, unfotunately for me I found VJ after I hired the lawyer... you still have time to get out of that road. The money can help you have an extra trip or help you pay for the inmigration fees. I think that even though you said you are a little messy, you'll be fine if you are able to follow instructions. Remember VisaJourney is on your side... take advantage of it!!!

I just don't understand why to hire a lawyer if your case is straight forward. It is NOT necessary. The process of obtaining the K1 visa is NOT brain surgery.

In addition to that, so many lawyers make mistakes.

A plus...

I forgot to mention that that price starts with the K-1 petition and goes thru citizenship! ...So it will include the AOS.

One other good thing, I find in all this is that she also translates ALL the documents and chat conversations (because all of it is done in Spanish)

Those are the only two ++ I see!!
