Social security - legal alien not allowed to work?

Hi,

 

Apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere.

 

I’m emigrating on Wednesday and will be going to the Social Security Administration Office on Thursday.

 

Looking at the form, section 5 (Citizenship) has these options: citizen, legal alien allowed to work, legal alien not allowed to work, other.

 

Should I be selecting ‘legal alien not allowed to work’ - as technically, until I have EAD, I won’t be allowed to work?

 

However, if that is what I select, the info section says: “If you check “Legal Alien Not Allowed to Work” or “Other,” you must provide a document from a U.S. Federal, State, or local government agency that explains why you need a Social Security number and that you meet all the requirements for the government benefit. NOTE: Most agencies do not require that you have a Social Security number. Contact us to see if your reason qualifies for a Social Security number.”

 

Ive never read anything about anyone having to provide that letter, which is making me think I should be ticking ‘legal alien allowed to work instead’...? Except I’m going in on a K1, so won’t be allowed to work...

 

As you can tell, I’m hugely confused. Help would be marvellous!

You are an alien allowed to work but only when you have authorization. Thus your card will have printed ''work only with DHS authorization''. Your EAD or green card, will be the authorization.
