Do you have your expired green card? If you have your expired Green Card along with a valid 18 month extension letter, you shouldn't any problems re-entering the US.  Many, many, many people use their valid extension letter and Green Card to re-enter the US every year.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

I am sorry to hear about your mom.  I hope she gets better.

No need to worry about airlines/authorities as you can always direct them to the official “Carrier Information Guide” published on CBP’s website:

https://www.cbp.gov/document/guides/carrier-information-guide-english

As it is stated on the Introduction (page 5 of 84), “The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Carrier Information Guide serves as a reference aid for travel industry personnel. It outlines the required documents that apply to persons entering or departing the United States. Carrier personnel are urged to familiarize themselves with all sections of the publication and reference it in their examination of travel documents.”

You can also print and have with you the links for the websites along with page 30 of the guide (page 38 of 84 for the PDF file) which is referring specifically to the extension of your expired green card (Notice of Action).

https://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/assets/documents/2019-Mar/2019 Carrier Information Guide - ENGLISH.pdf

Chances are, the expedited request will not help as you have all valid documents that are required for travel, but you never know.

I hope this helps.

I hear you. I traveled to Lebanon with an expired GC and extension letter. Coming back to the US, the airlines in Lebanon would not let me board, they said my GC is expired and they don't know what an extension letter is. I told them I need to talk to their Supervisor. The Supervisor didn't know what is that either. I showed them an official link about it and asked them to call the embassy if they have issue or need to confirm, and that if I miss the flight they will be in big trouble. They then let me board convinced that I will be turned back at the US airport.

The immigration process caused me PTSD.

I recently went to China and the airline staff was familiar with it. I had no issues whatsoever. I'm going to Chile in December and I hope it's the same.

I think you should just go ahead and book your flight, especially because it's related to your mom's health. Expediting could take too long!

what happened to this service center

You literally posted this last month.

Go to the USCIS website and look at the processing times.  Vermont is showing as 13.5-19 months and that’s just an estimate.  Your not an odd one out here.  This leg of the journey is long for everyone.
