'Don’t Tell Us What To Wear’: Japanese Women Protest Workplace Glasses Ban

Topline: A TV news story on Japanese companies barring women from wearing eyeglasses while on the clock sparked a backlash, as Japanese women frustrated by the strict workplace dress codes took to Twitter to voice their displeasure.

According to the BBC, several Japanese outlets said companies have “banned” women from wearing eyeglasses and that they give a “cold impression” to female shop assistants.

Other reasons for the ban include safety for airline workers and being able to clearly see makeup for beauty industry workers.

Bloomberg reported, however, that men are allowed to wear glasses at work.

...

Surprising fact: Japan has “common requirements” for women’s appearance at work. Makeup and high heels are mandatory. And the Japanese use the term “Yamato Nadeshiko” to refer to the ideal woman. She is a perfect housewife and mother, but still beautiful and youthful, according to a Georgetown University blog post.

I don't wear glasses, but I generally do wear a little makeup every day to work. Heels I wear when I feel like it, or when it might be useful when dealing with certain customers (sad but true). But ultimately it is my choice, even though my job puts me in front of the public daily. I can't imagine being forced into doing these things simply to hold down a job. Really hoping this actually does something for these Japanese women.

I think that some men would be into that.

Unfortunately this is just another example of harsh realities in the Japanese workplace culture, that burns out young men and women for a good part of their lives.

It's really sad, and when coupled with the low birth rate and dropping marriage rate, you wonder how sustainable it all is.

I have many friends in Korea and they also talk about the very low birth rate there.  As to the eyeglasses ban for women in Japan, that is just stupid.

I don't pretend to know the reasons why for the low birth rate and marriage rate, but I wonder how much of it has to do with expectations that women will leave the workforce and stay at home once they marry and have children. A population of young women who have seen more of the world may want to continue to work, travel and have lives outside of the home. I know some women are very happy with being homemakers, and I 100% support their choice to do so. But it's not for everyone (it wasn't for me) -- I at least had the opportunity to rejoin the workforce and live life outside the home because our society accepts and perhaps even encourages it.

Of course it is anecdotal, my friends say the low birth is mostly due to the high cost of raising children.  One of my friends has four children which is a rarity in the ROK, and our other friends call him rich.  I am sure women wanting to work more outside the home, and people waiting much longer to have children also plays a role.

do this study in the Philippines and you would be mortified by the results of how women are treated in the workforce.

Stewardess rules for the 60's would be a good start to measure them, height/weight proportional, age restrictions,  beauty expectations, off the store floors by age 30 for younger more attractive females to be displayed, it's amazing these women put up with it

I thought "SM" meant Santa Monica for a moment and Alex is actually down there right now -- his work is considering setting up another outpost down on Silicon Beach, and if they did, we might follow -- and I was thinking, wow, I could do that job, where is it? And then I remembered I'm 34. :(

And then I realized "SM" was almost certainly not Santa Monica.
