I suppose we are fortunate when it comes to this. Pete's and my parents are both supportive of us. I love his parent's and he does mine. They both just want what's best for their children. Of course the natural concerns will come up like employment...but Pete's a workaholic...so I don't see that as a problem..lol

My parents thought that I had lost my mind. They were even embarrassed because of the whole "How Stella Got Her Goove Back" movie. So other people would make smart azz Stella comments. They also had concerns about him using me for a visa too. But after we got married and he stuck with me through serious illness they realized that he isn't going anywhere and just let it go...and then started bugging me about when he was coming. Once he moved here and they actually met, they love him. I'm sure he was nothing like they were expecting....

My parents weren't exactly thrilled with the fact. I repeatedly heard the "why can't you marry an american" lecture. Of course I heard every negative comment from family and friends and I swear if I had a dollar for "he's using you for a greencard" I'd be rich. They were still having their concerns the night I went to the airport!!!! Now they love hi and I just hav to sit back and chuckle....TOLD YOU YOU"D LOVE HIM TOO!

First marriage they tried to ground me from going to Romania (I was 27 years old.) I got all the 'He's just marrying you for the visa' talk and yeah, they were right. Lesson learned. End of story.

This one, when we got serious enough that I had to say something. Man, it took courage to come to my family and tell them I fell in love with another foreigner!!!! I got looks and 'didn't you learn the first time Vikki?' talks. That is until they found out this one was from England. Then it immediately changed into "OHHH DOES HE HAVE A SINGLE BROTHER/SISTER/COUSIN/AUNT/UNCLE/FRIEND?" My mom was the one being a hard ### about it until the second she met Jonny (and then he set up a wireless internet router for her, even better.)

Life long Texan, living in Hull, UK. How did this happen?

11 January - We met online and became friends

4 February - Became a couple

17 March - I went to Hull to meet the guy

20 March - First "I love you"

25 March - I go home :(

16 November - He comes to visit me in Texas

25 November - he leaves back home :(

14 December - ENGAGED! <3

1 March- I fly off to see my babe in Hull

4 April - I go home :(

9 October - He comes back to Texas!!!!

13 October - WEDDING!!!

22 October - He goes back to England and I continue to wait for my settlement visa.

13 December 2007 - Move to England

Now the wait begins, I will become a citizen then we will DFC back to the US.

My parents were pretty cool with it. To them it wasn't really that strange. Since it was my mom who married my dad who was from Sweden. They too went through the visa process back in the 80's. Although then I think it was much simpler.

I also have a cousin who married a someone from Togo a couple years ago. And my sister married someone from Mexico, although he was already an American citizen by the time they met.

When I first told my parents about my fiance from Indonesia. My dad said, "Oh cool another place we can go and visit".

I guess the only thing that my mom was a little apprehensive about was that Indonesia is a Muslim country and she didn't want me to become a Muslim. But it doesn't really matter since my fiance and I are pretty much agnostic/atheist.

I got the he may not like it here...

What kind of work will he do...

What if he's using you just to get a green card etc...

But once he got here and they met him, they welcomed him to our family with open arms and have been very supportive.

I got the same "he's using you for a GC" story. And the you are educated he is not, he may not like the US, la la la, in the end it all turned out great. I think families have doubts because in these visa cases they haven't met your SO and worry. Once they meet them, they see the reasons that you fell in love, and accept them.

Now, it's all fine & dandy. My mom calls to see what my husband wants for dinner, when we go stop by her house... now I'm jealous.

No one understands a visa process unless someone goes through one!

supportive, but mixed feelings. ...because they don't know him. And they had the same reaction as most strangers have when you tell them you want to marry someone from another country - suspicious that he's just doing it for the immigration benefit...especially when he has employment problems and children. And because it's been complicated (we have to apply for I-601 for waiver of visa refusal, because he has convictions on his police record) that makes them more suspicious. But for the most part they are giving him the benefit of the doubt.

My parents were cool with it....after a time. At first I got the usual concerns: "using me for a green card," "what kind of job" and "will he treat you with respect?" However, they actually ended up meeting him and his family before we even talked about getting married and now they really love him. Having my parents "ok" was really important for both of us to move forward. All but one of my friends have been way beyond supportive of our relationship and of me bringing him here. And from what I can tell all of his friends and family have been nothing but supportive of our relationship and the "process."

My husband asked to meet my family right on, had a one-on-one talk with my parents and spoke of a possibility of marriage (my dad is hard to please). So he got the prelim nod.

My dad was a bit hesitant (insisted for me and my fiance then to have a 2-year engagement) and that staying in my country is best, at least for 3 years. But nature set in, we missed each other like crazy! :P

I haven't thought of bringing any family member if not for visiting purposes. My husband insists that we invite them for a visit though, or us travelling back to the PI. The family loves him very much! And I'm so cool with it. Same goes for his family with me.

"This is the sort of story that ends with you dead under a bear." -- my dad on the phone, July 2004, to me in the Laguardia Airport on my first trip to Edmonton.

"Are you sure you need to get him a visa? Maybe you've read wrong. Mrs. Pokrywka down the street says that all he has to do is marry you and he's automatically a citizen. Isn't he Canadian? Can't he come down whenever he wants anyway?" -- my mom, September 2006 - February 2007, variously.

"How come you have to support him? That doesn't seem right." - my mom, I-864-related discussions.
