SSN Application Purged after K1 expired - Can I reapply with EAD?

Hi,

So, a week or so after I entered the USA with a K1 visa, I went down to the local SSA office and tried applying for a Social Security card.

I was notified that it could take a while since they couldn't find me in the automated systems, so they had sent it off for additional verification.

I tracked the case in SAVE and a week or so after, the case status was 'Returned to SSA', meaning that I guess they had finished all the additional checks.

This was back in March this year. I have been back to the Social Security office a couple of times, but I was told that in the end, my application was purged from the system as they hadn't received any notification from SSA about the additional verification.

I have now received my EAD/AP combo card, and I was wondering if I could go back in to either re-apply or get a letter of ineligibility, as I would like to start the application process for getting a learner permit in NY. The DMV requires either a SSN or a letter saying I can't get an SSN right now (but I am technically eligible for one, it's just that my application went though.

Thanks for your help on this.

Matt

Was your I94 correct when you entered the US?

Personally I'd go back to the SSA, or try a different and more competent SSA, ask if ''hey can you find me in the system now dumbdumbs?" and try again. Sounds like they didn't know what they were doing.

I posted about this before coz I hda the same problem but now it's all sorted. Anyway, not sure if this will till help but tell SSA to check the SAVE website coz apparently their system is not linked to it that's why they just say there's no notification from DHS when in actuality, there is.

It was all correctly laid out, had my first, middle and last names. They said that they couldn't let me reapply in previous trips since my i94 had expired, and one of the agents asked me if I was in the country illegally! I guess he'd never seen a K1 before.

I'm going to go back there today to see if they can let me reapply. It's such an annoying process...

Update: Everything went well - I was allowed to reapply, and my card should be with me in 2 weeks. I didn't get the extended letter this time with the Additional Verification text.

Have you checked it on SAVE website? If it says " Case returned to SSA", go back to your local SSA office and ask them to check it. If they say there's no notification yet, tell them that you checked on SAVE and it's already been returned and ask them if they could check it on SAVE website for you.
