I think pedroh's the only one that keeps equating illegals to Mexico. ZOMG!

It's the common defense strategy of the pro-amnesty crowd. Pedroh ain't alone on that front. Steven is doing the exact same thing: Discredit the other side by attacking an argument that nobody there has made.

I haven't seen any of the anti-illegals here making ad hominem attacks, but I have seen the pro-illegal camp doing it...assuming that we all know what ad hominem actually means. Oops...maybe THAT was an ad hominem attack too.

pedroh,

I don't give a rats behind where the illegal is from (meaning any part of the world).

if you're illegal ... bye ... and don't let the door hit you on the @$$ as you leave.

I don't know who addie_goodvibes is. I haven't seen anything in these discussions that I would consider to be "ridiculously xenophobic" but obviously I'm coming from a completely different POV. I am anti-illegal immigration and I'd love to see the illegals rounded up and deported because they have no right whatsoever to be in the United States. It's also an undeniable fact that the majority of these illegals are Mexican nationals. Simply stating a fact to me is not xenophobia.

Maybe it would help if you showed me an example of something you consider to be "ridiculously xenophobic".

After reading through this thread I'm a little confused about some of the points being made. I didn't read any racist or xenophobic arguments being made in this thread by anyone here (as you pointed above), so I'm not sure what is served by pulling that out here, when those arguments haven't been made. It seems a little bait and switch - I mean illegal immigration IS a BIG (economic/social) PROBLEM however we choose to present it.

In fact it might be said that the reason things are so bad today is because politicians have only paid lip-service to the problem - harping on presentation rather than actually finding realistic solutions.

There was a post a few days ago about "Clown Houses" and "rapists" in a thread a few days ago. That sort of thing seems to be the exception rather than the norm - certainly as far as this thread goes.

That's not exactly what I remember from other discussions here in OT but if you say that you have no opinion on the issue one way or the other then I take your word for it.

Most of those arguments I think are made out of anger, rather than genuine prejudice - but referring to people as "Stray dogs", "terrorists", "cockroaches" and "rapists" (as that poster variously did) is always going to raise eyebrows.

That's what I'm wondering... Bringing the race argument into a thread where those arguments haven't been made would seem to be a veiled opinion. If noone's said it, if noone's referencing sources who've said those things - then surely its not an issue.

Sure, but referring to illegals that way to me doesn't necessarily imply xenophobia, which is a general dislike of foreigners. I don't think it would be correct to refer to pretty much anyone here as xenophobic since most of us USCs here married or are going to marry a non-USC...hard to do if you dislike foreigners.

It's prejudiced on some level - but not xenophobic, nor necessarily even racist - though the race argument gets tacked on because the vast majority of illegals are of hispanic/latino descent. Still referring to another person as a "cockroach" or a "stray dog" isn't a label I would choose to use - to describe anyone.

I guess it depends on whether or not you think those sorts of views are typical and widely held.
