Election day in Kentucky, Mississippi and Virginia

By Veronica Rocha and Fernando Alfonso III, CNN

It's Election Day

  • Kentucky: Democrat Andy Beshear claimed victory in the governor's race, but Republican Gov. Matt Bevin said he is not conceding.
  • Virginia: Democrats will flip both chambers of the Virginia legislature, taking control of the state Senate and the House of Delegates, CNN projects.
  • Mississippi: Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, a Republican, is running against Attorney General Jim Hood, a Democrat.
  • Why these races matter: The outcome of the races could shed light on how the US is leaning in the middle of an impeachment inquiry and as it heads into a presidential election year.

Trump apparently couldn't save the unpopular Bevin after campaigning with him in Lexington the night before the election, where the president told supporters that a loss by the GOP governor would be portrayed as Trump's having suffered "the greatest defeat in the history of the world."

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, the candidates were separated by less than 10,000 votes. Beshear was leading with 49.4 percent, or 706,865 votes, to Bevin's 48.7 percent, or 696,918 votes.

Bevin declined to concede on Tuesday night, citing unspecified "irregularities" in a speech to supporters, while Beshear declared victory, telling the crowd, "My expectation is that he will honor the election that was held tonight."

Didn’t we follow a process back in 2000 and 2016?  Should that be skipped now?

I don't know the history.

Well forgetting the history of 2000, and 2016, with the vote difference being around 5,000 votes statewide, Bevin has a right to ask for a re-canvassing of precincts.  Beyond that, he could request a recount, but that he would have to pay for.  He would I believe have to provide a legitimate reason for a recount which he may have, who knows.  In general, recounts by GOPers don't go anywhere, so if I were him, I would concede as it sounds like he is not very well liked in Kentucky, but of course, I am not he.

Before my move to FL so many years ago I was a resident of the Commonwealth, and a graduate of the University of Louisville.  I also am a conservative.

I don't follow politics in KY very closely, but I do know Bevin is a  SOB and not well liked.  Can't believe he got as many votes as he did.  He screwed over the U of Louisville a couple of years ago.

If I still lived in KY I wouldn't have voted for him either.

Check out this link because they laid it out pretty good on why he won in KY

That's basically what they said on the links I posted above. That Republicans won ALL 5 of the down ballot statewide races going on. So that means that people actively had to vote against him for him to be voted out.

Thanks, I will get through the videos.  I would tell you that I cannot do it now because I am enjoying a spa day and my screen time is limited AND I need the full nourishment from the cucumber watercress lotion to take hold but I don't want to trigger folks who think spa time is not essential to a woman's regimen.💆🌿🈳🥤🥤♨️🛍️

There's no way to win -- if you indulge, you're a pampered princess; if you don't maintain upkeep, you've let yourself go. So I'll go with princess. 👸
