I am only speaking on my personal experience and people i personally know who experienced that. When you present a stamp on a passport to an airline agent, most of the times they don't know if legit or not. Plus, when you get the extension letter, you do not get a stamp on the passport even if you asked for it. I went multiple times to the USCIS office asking for it when my green card was returned undelivered. They told me that I have a letter to use for international travels and refused to stamp my passport because i have an approved case or letter. I also (as stated above) asked an officer in Morocco about it and they informed me that they usually don't allow it because they don't know if it is 100% legit and most of the times can't verify it because they don't have the appropriate means. I know someone who got stuck in Europe because the airline refused their boarding. He had to go to the US embassy to get special permission for it. From the US perspective, it is perfectly fine especially in Canada or Mexico, but in other places where they don't interact with it a lot, it could be a problem because it is more of an airline agent, than border officers. Yes, you should be able to travel and US laws allow that, but in foreign countries, they don't recognize it much.  Research it in more places that VJ and you will learn more stories.

So are you saying a expired green card + extension letter is not enough for international travel. I have many international travel plans next year and about to send my wife I-751. What is the solution ?

also what guide are you all using for i751 paperwork cover letter etc. can someone link me ?

thanks

what i am asking is if there is problem travelling with expired card + extension letter.

I don't think it should be a problem. Not saying that nobody ever had a problem.

I traveled last year to Europe and I was never asked about my green card since you travel on your passport. You only need it when you enter the US. You could see if you can find paperwork that explains what the extension letter means, I guess.

Well, if it is expired, why would you use it for travels? It's expired which makes it worthless!

It all depends on the airline agents and sometimes customs.

It should be fine, but just do your research and ask questions!

Well, your passport falls under VWP assuming you are using a dutch passport (They don't need to check your green card or a visa to board the plane) and when you arrive to the US, the customs can verify your extension letter or the stamp because they know that stuff.  Unlike the countries who are not part of the Visa Waver Program, they want to check your eligibility and they only see a physical card, so when you show an expired card along with that letter, they get confused and the problems start because they are not educated about it and they assume something is wrong.  Again, this happened to someone I know and I personally asked airport custom agents and they confirmed it to me.

I still think a expired green card + extension letter is more effective than a extension letter alone

You HAVE to bring your greencard even when it's expired. No wonder the "people you know" got into problems boarding the plane if all they had was the extension letter. The extension letter is only valid when you present it TOGETHER WITH THE EXPIRED GREENCARD.

International travels are perfectly fine, happy travels to those of you who are travelling during your ROC journey.
