Yes nothing is going to have the right "texture" without that nice saturated fat. It provides an ethical alternative whether your concern is environmental or animal treatment.

If you look at it from this from a global perspective, adding a few billion to the planet becomes less impactful with this solution maybe saving a rainforest or two.

It's definitely a positive environmentally and probably a necessity in the long run. If they can get the taste and the price right, I would be on board.

It's kind of like eating a HungryMan tv dinner vs eating those Healthy Choice dinners. They both taste kind of bad, but the healthy choice ones taste even worse and have just as much sodium and fat.

Except both beef burgers and beyond burgers taste good 😋, but the fat is the same.

Do they though? I'm not big into eating beef, but I look at the ingredients in the 'fake stuff' and there's nothing in there remotely appetizing. I'd rather have a salad!

I think those are the veggie burgers mentioned in the article.

THE NUTRITION FACTOR

If you thought Beyond Burger might make a good low-fat alternative to beef burgers, well, think again: "According to the nutrition label on the back, the Beyond Burger has significantly more protein, sodium, calories, and fat compared to a normal burger," Tech Insider points out.

but it makes the MDL feel good

Kind of like Organic which is total bs

It really is for people who are vegetarian/vegan/flexitarian who want a little more variety. I like the flavor and texture, personally, and as a flexi I appreciate being able to cook up a patty for myself on a night I'm making a burger for my fiance. He's not sold on them, but he does like the Beyond sausages quite a bit (as do I). My fellow Americans, no one is coming for your hamburgers! 😀

It's good to know when it's worth buying organic and when it doesn't make much difference. I look at where they use the most pesticides (ie. apples, peaches, strawberries, grapes). Those are good trade offs to buy organic. Unless you like eating poison. There are diminishing returns on other products.

We diverged from science fiction a while ago. They can grow meat in a lab now. I'd probably go with the plant burgers before the engineered ground beef.

Sort of along these lines, how do you feel about lab-grown gemstones? I'm engagement ring shopping at the moment and I'm considering going in that direction. It's not a cost-saving thing, but really that way I can ensure that the gems are conflict-free from a lab with high labor standards (I would only consider a US/UK/EU lab). Neither he nor I really have any objection to the concept of lab-grown stones, but I guess there's some part of me that (even though I know I shouldn't) worries about what other people (*cough* my dad *cough*) will think. My dad already has some issues with him relating to money, and I don't need to throw more wood on that particular fire.

What I read us the opposite. Root crops like potatoes, carrots absorb and retain the chemicals where fruits and leaves are topical and rinse off easily.  But I don't have the science either way.

I am seeing a smaller gap in-between organic and non-organic prices.

There is zero benefit to organic. It also drives up cost, drives down production and less yield per acre. It makes poor people starve

I suggest season 7 episode 6 of Penn and Tellers show, the name of which is not family friendly

What's wrong with lab grown? A gem is a gem, who cares? You know how much suffering is brought about by the diamond industry right? Diamonds don't make you better and not having a 'real' one doesn't mean the person loves you any less. There is little biological difference, and no one would be able to tell. As for cost saving, you can find lots of wedding rings that don't cost a ton. My husband's late grandmother bought our rings... on sale. It is completely unique as in they don't even make it anymore and is unusual in it's design and was just the sort I always wanted. Stop worrying about what other people will think and get what you enjoy.

I actually have no opinion on gemstones at all. I have the feeling my wife would want a "real" one even if she couldn't tell the difference between them, but that's just her. I could be wrong. I would ask her, but then she'll think that she's getting one, and that will come back to bite me when she gets a bowling ball for Christmas.

Oh, I have no problem with lab grown! I would prefer it because I am concerned about the working conditions of the people who make the things I consume. I buy American wherever possible, and try to shop locally from smaller stores wherever possible. The other option is going vintage and I'm looking at those too. My issue is really about my dad and HIS hangups about something totally unrelated to the ring which is more of a family problem than anything else.
