What isn’t mentioned in the story is the poll found 36% of millennials had a favorable view of communism.

New poll finds 70% of millennials say they're "likely" to vote for a socialist

Younger Americans are more likely to support a socialist political candidate and their views are capitalism are significantly more negative than older Americans, according to a poll conducted by YouGov for the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation.

The poll found that just 50 percent of millennials, or people born between 1981 and 1996, have a positive opinion of capitalism, while 70 percent said they would be somewhat or extremely likely to vote for a socialist candidate. The number of millennials who said they would be “extremely” likely to back a socialist candidate doubled from 10 percent last year to 20 percent in 2019.

Generation Z, or those born between 1997 and 2012, also have severe qualms with capitalism. Just 49 percent of Generation Z respondents expressed a positive view of capitalism while 64 percent said they would vote for a socialist candidate. The poll only sampled Americans over the age of 16.

Older generations of Americans have a significantly different outlook.

Nearly 60 percent of Generation X respondents, or those born between 1965 and 1980, said they have a positive view of capitalism while 44 percent said they would support a socialist candidate.

What was mentioned is how millennials have grown up in an age where under regulated capitalism has often come close to destroying the global economy, and how those responsible have been repeatedly bailed out and rarely held accountable. They also mention stagnant wages, high college debt, lack of entry level jobs. There is really no surprise here. We are not always cognizant of how much people are influenced by the conditions they live through.

I don't think it's a trend. When I graduated from college, it was common to get great job offers, pay off your loan quick, and start saving for your first house. Of course capitalism was great. Now young people in there 20's can't even afford to move out of their parents home. Of course they won't have the same outlook.

We all had that generational gap. I used to smile at my grandparents for saving every bread crumb and vegetable peel to use for some other meal. So much easier to just work an hour of OT and buy more. It wasn't when my grandparents grew up, and they always lived with that outlook. It won't surprise me if millenials always have a level of distrust of the establishment. Even when they become the establishment.

Why is secondary education so expensive now days?  Is it related to the amount of government assistance available, and the fact that the universities want that money?  I also grew up at a time when paying off student loans was less than 4-5 years, and it is amazing how much that has ballooned now.

There's a lot of reasons why a good secondary education is expensive. My husband working behind the scenes in the field gets to see the amount of bureaucratic waste every day.. and that's at a college that provides good foundational work skills (so I can only imagine how bad it is elsewhere). His own education was not free and there are hefty loans to pay. At this rate it'll probably be 15 years. Had he been still in the UK, I imagine he'd never been able to pay it off.

Everyone could get a student loan when I went to school too. It wasn't that long ago. Everyone likes to say it's the availability of student loans that made secondary education expensive. Maybe it's the fact that wages haven't really kept up with expenses in any area of life. I saved up ahead of time and paid for 2 years of school. I'm not sure that's something that is easily done nowadays.

That may be a reason it is difficult for someone to payoff excessive student loans today, but it really isn't a reason why government subsidized secondary education is so expensive today.

How much has secondary education increased compared to something like houses or cars though? Or the cost of food? Or to buy a new furnace? I’m just saying that may be the primary reason. If all those things have outpaced wage increases, then the cost of anything and everything could be relatively more than it was.  If that’s not the case, and if secondary education costs have outpaced all those other things, then it’s time to consider other reasons.

The old saying. If your not a liberal when you are young you have no heart and if your not a conservative when your old you have no sense.

Well, the inflation of tuition outpaces the CPI-U by approximately a factor of 2.

Roughly similar to gas, houses and prescription drugs. You can probably make a similar argument with the availability of loans affecting home prices though.

I think that argument was made when the housing bubble burst 11 years ago.  One of the big things I see with universities today is how many students are there that should not be there.  There are so many other opportunities out there for people that don't require going into debt for years only to get a relatively worthless degree.  So are they there because it is so easy to get approved for the debt?
