Hello,

i got few questions for applying n-400 after 3 years of marriage to US citizen wife. I just got my new greencard last week.

following are my questions:

1. should I apply online? Or paper by mail? (I have started to fill out form online and attached documents as well)

2. The instructions ask to submit tax returns for past 3 years;however, for the first year, I applied tax return individually since my wife and daughter were living with my wife’s sister so she claimed them dependents on her tax return 2016. Last year, when I applied for renewal of green card, i just sent tax return of 2017. I am really confused that should i include my tax return 2016 and write an explanation that my family were claimed dependent by her sister since I moved to US towards the end of year 2016 (got my job starting december)

3. For filling out employment part on the form,  i have had three jobs since I moved to US. The thing is that I always had my old job ending on Fridays and new ones started on Mondays. So, technically speaking,  I was not employed for that certain weekend; so, I don’t see any choice but to show myself as unemployed for two days. Is there something else that you guys can suggest?

4. What evidence should I attach? I am attaching our marriage certificate,  birth certificates of both of my kids, naturalization certificate for wife (should i also add her passport?), how about passport of both kids? , i am attaching driving licenses for me and wife, copy of our tenant lease, photographs, our airline tickets, joint bank statement, health insurance covering my family, 401 k? Should I include all those joint documents that I sent last year to renew greencard?

5. If i file online, would I be sending scanned version of my passport photos?

6. If i file online, do i need to write a cover letter mentioning that what documents am I sending? ( i sent cover letter last time for renewal of greencard by mail)

Sorry for bombarding with all the questions. Thanks for all the help.

Hello,

i got few questions for applying n-400 after 3 years of marriage to US citizen wife. I just got my new greencard last week.

following are my questions:

1. should I apply online? Or paper by mail? (I have started to fill out form online and attached documents as well) - Apply online, much easier

I am really confused that should i include my tax return 2016 and write an explanation that my family were claimed dependent by her sister since I moved to US towards the end of year 2016 (got my job starting december) - Did you file married? If not, you need to amend your return first.

- You're overthinking it. Don't add those "periods on unemployment".

- Yes. Anything to prove ongoing relationship.

5. If i file online, would I be sending scanned version of my passport photos? - No photos needed.

6. If i file online, do i need to write a cover letter mentioning that what documents am I sending? ( i sent cover letter last time for renewal of greencard by mail) - No.

Sorry for bombarding with all the questions. Thanks for all the help.

thanks for your immediate response.

please have a look at an attached image, which says that 'you are missing information". should I leave it like this?

For tax return 2016, I filed 'married filing separately'; should I add in that year's tax return or not? if yes, then write an explanation letter stating that my wife and daughter were claimed dependents by her sister since I didn't move to USA till end of year.

Thanks

I forgot the N-400 was based on days, not months :bonk: I just put my previous employment lasting until Sunday, then new employment starting on Monday.

For the tax return, I'd submit and not worry about it.
