Greencard to Thailand

My wife got her greencard through k1, we are planning on a visit to Thailand. I know that we need to get a Thai Visa for her but does she need a reentry permit? I know I just need to show my US Passport at our borders and in Thailand. What does she have to show when arriving and departing Thailand? I heard some people getting Reentry Permits but I think they have a different type of Greencard (Refugee). Anyone experience any problems that have been to Thailand recently. I think her Thai Passport has expired.

Why would she need a Thai visa if her passport is from Thailand?

As a green card holder, she will be able to re-enter the USA without issue, so long as her passport is valid. You say that her Thai passport has expired, in which case she will need to get it renewed before she travels. I expect that she won't get into Thailand without it being valid. As the poster above said, I can't see why she would need a Thai visa. She is still a Thai citizen.

Good point on the Thai Visa, I believe her thai passport is still in her maiden name, i guess we will have to get that changed and get it renewed. So I guess all we really have to show the green card is when we leave and come back into the US and show her Thai Passport in Thailand. Is that right?

No, I'd think that was incorrect. She would have to show her green card when reentering the US and , not that it matters seeing as she will be carrying her green card and passport.

in case her GC is in her new last name which differs from her name in her passport (maiden name) she has to bring her marriage certificate with her that goes along with the GC. Enjoy your trip!!! :-)

She does not need a Thai visa, and she does not need a US re-entry permit unless she is going to be out of the USA for more than 1 year.

If her passport has expired she'll need a new or renewed one.

When arriving in Thailand Thai immigration will want to see her passport. When departing Thailand the airline check-in staff will want to see her Thai passport and her US greencard. If her name on the passport and greencard is different then they will want to see a document that reconciles the difference - typically the marriage certificate will take care of that. Thai immigration will also check her passport, I'm not sure if they will want to see the greencard also.

When re-entering the USA US immigration will want to see both the passport and the greencard.

So what name should we buy the plane tickets? I'm more worried about entering and exiting Thailand, because of her maiden name. Her Thai passport and Thai ID are still under her maiden name. I went to Thai Embassy today and the lady at the front desk said in order for me to change her name on the Thai passport would take some steps with the Dept of State and the state where we were married and getting the documents translated, etc. Anyone went to Thailand already with this situation? Leave message or pm me please.

You are in a fortunate position to the extent that you are close enough to drive to the Thai Embassy and take care of things in person.

There is a Thai Embassy web site with the forms necessary to apply for a new Thai passport while residing in the USA. Download this form, get the passport photos taken, and prepare things for another visit to the Embassy during their service hours. www.thaiembdc.org and go to "Consular Services"

Additionally, there is a form on the Thai Embassy website to report "Registration of Marriage". This is under the "Registrations" subsection of the "Consular Services" area. Essentially, this form reports the marriage, who the Thai citizen married, and any resulting name change.

Prepare to pay the fees associated with filing these forms.

Now, when you take all this to the embassy, I can see how it may go one of two ways. They may issue a new passport. Or, as in the case of my wife, the Embassy stamped in a three-year extension of validity. Her passport had already been expired for nearly a year. So essentially she has two more years.

There is also a section of the Thai passport for something like "Endorsements" or some such title. I don't have her passport in front of me. Anyway, there is a nearly full page stamp that goes here in both Thai and English language that states the passport holder has married, and now goes by her married name which is plainly stated.

So, with this my wife has a valid passport. We expect to be able to get tickets in her married name. No doubt this will fail the initial tickets vs. passport check, at which time we will point out the name change endorsement and hopefully be on our way.

You may find it beneficial for your wife to be there at the Embassy with you. In fact, my wife went in by herself and handled the whole thing. I expect there could be some difference in treatment accorded to the Thai citizen compared to the foreign husband.

Your results may vary, as does everything else associated with official Thai business.
