That's the other thing that there's far too much of in packaged food... salt. Shame nobody makes low-salt preserved foods, but salt is a preservative and it's cheap and it gives stuff flavour...

Yeah, we (or I should say "I") am really making an effort to only use packaged foods that are either sodium-free or low-sodium whenever I use them. And cooking with fresh foods tastes so much better anyway. For instance I was just at the store to get something to go with the leftover pot roast from yesterday. I was just going to grab some pre-packaged mashed potatoes because I quite frankly couldn't be arsed to go through the process of making potatoes. I looked at the sodium and was like...oh, no, this is rediculous. So I got the cutest little potatoes...they are called Russian banana fingerlings (yeah, I know...I was confused at the name), and it takes just 10 minutes to cook in boiling water, then I'll just slap some butter substitute, parsely, and maybe, rosemary on them...and they will be good to go....and so much better for us than the packaged stuff.

Oi, like you all needed to know THAT....

I ate mre's for 1 yr while in Iraq (Desert storm). We were always on the go and never had a T ration meal.

They are high in calories and not good to eat all the time . And most taste horrible. worst to me are the older frankfurters and the ham and egg patty. Best to me Chicken ala king and spagetti

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

The new ones are actually quite good.

And, you're in luck. I have an "emergency" supply of them right now, and I'd be willing to send you some for less than that website.

PM me and maybe we can work out a deal via paypal or something.

They're not too bad. I didn't really like the nacho cheese in one I had much though! Definitely edible, just not gourmet cuisine :)

I am surprised that no one explained what "MRE" really stands for. That is: "Meals Rejected by Ethiopians" ! ;)

Disclaimer for the sense-of-humor-challenged - that is a joke.

Check this out... These would be a good backup plan food item. MREs are a high calorie food for soldiers really.

I think I'll pass on the food tabs... I'm not that desperate! I'm really looking for food that we can eat in our own home because I don't expect to have to evacuate or anything... but I can see they'd be a handy emergency ration for a real disaster.

On the other hand, thinking about it they sound like they'd be a great resource to keep in the car for dire emergencies (or even if we break down some place and don't have any food with us - I'm hypoglycemic and have to eat every four hours while I'm awake or I get sick. I usually carry candy of some sort or glucotabs but these would be more nutritious). Thanks for pointing them out!
