Has anyone else had their hair go wavy/curly as they got older?

My hair was always straight from birth to...well...now. I've been wearing my hair long for years because it's a faff to go to the hairdresser in York...there are so few...but I got my long hair cut off to jaw length on Wednesday and with all that weight gone, it is now WAVY.

I don't want wavy hair! :crying: :crying: :crying:

My hair is dead straight but when it hits a humid day it goes curly. My suggestion is get a de-frizzing hair product to use when you dry it, there are some really good ones out there.

My hair is jaw length too and it is always the front bits that decide to go their own way. *sighs*

I had wavy hair as a child, but as i got older it went straight. I even had perms to give it some body. Fast forward to now and my hair is curly!!!!!!!!! ever since i had surgery  It's a PITA i agree, but unless im going somewhere really special, i will straighten my hair, otherwise, i embrace my curls best i can

I too had straight hair throughout my life but in the last couple of years it has gone wavy. I just throw it up in a ponytail!

My hair never used to be as curly as it is now...its not real tight curls but curls all the same.

The humidity makes it SO much worse :crying:

My hair's naturally curly and I straighten it most days.

For some reason it straightens much easier in the US than in the UK. Must be the water.

I would love naturally straight hair, but I guess you're never happy with what you have.

My hair has gone through phases -- Shirley Temple curls when I was a baby, then straight from ages 2-23, then all of a sudden -- lightly wavy. My SFB ex hated my wavy hair so like a total tool I straightened my hair for years to make him happy. (Obviously didn't work! )

After we broke up, and after Bruce and I had been dating for a while, I put away the straighteners and blowdryers. And voila! My hair started to get really wavy, more than ever before. I love my new wavy hair, and because I don't use any heat appliances on it anymore it is shiny and healthy. I use curly hair shampoo and conditioner to control the frizz and some Boots curl cream (meauxna put me on to it!) for definition.

Learn to love the curl!

YES!! My hair used to be absolutely poker-straight, wouldn't need straightening or even blow-drying, it would just always, always be completely straight. Then I got it cut short a few years ago, and sometime while growing back, the bloody stuff went all wavy. I thought maybe when it got long enough to make it weigh more, it would go back to being straight again, but... nope, it waves all over the place and has a definite curl to it. I am not impressed!

Stupid hair.... *mutter* :angry::angry::angry:

My hair is naturally wavy too. Sometimes I like trying to make it really curly, but most days I straighten it. GHDS are the best straighteners out there - although they are the most expensive, they really are the best!

:crying: Sold mine on eBay a couple of months ago (they didn't work properly here anyway)... I didn't use them that much for fear of frying my hair, but I miss them! I'll get some more one day! :(

It isn't uncommon for hair to change from straight to curly or vise versa. Scientists have yet to be able to explain why.

One theory is if the hair follicle is round- the hair will grow straight and is the hair follicle is oval it will grow curly. I don't believe that the hair follicles change their shape over the course of our lives, so I have never believed this one.

Hormones- I can attest to many of my clients hair changing dramatically during pregnancy and after having a child. Hormones can come into play at any time during our lives. How and why it changes the hair, as far as I know- no one has figured this out yet.

Humidity can make the hair the wavy-yes. Although in my head I wonder how- if the hair is taking in moisture, wouldn't that moisture add extra weight to the hair and actually make it flatter or straighter? But, in that respect, I guess hair can really only take in so much moisture from the air.

Some people do cut their hair to all of a sudden find their hair wavy. Chances are those waves were always there, just the extra weight of the hair was pulling those waves down and they didn't notice.

During the perming process- we use chemicals (ammonium thioglycolate) to break down the hydrogen and sulfer bonds in the hair. Those bond will take on the shape of the perm rod and then the neutralizer (oxygen base) will harden those bonds into their newly formed shape. We use some pretty harsh chemical to do this, so how hair can curl on it own after being naturally straight is a huge mystery.

For anyone familiar with Terry Fox (most canadians will know) Terry lost his leg to cancer and his goal was to run from one side of Canada to the other. He didn't make it all the way, he passed away. Terry was well known for his red curly hair, but before he had chemo his hair was straight and brown.

Shock to the body can also do some strange things to the hair- hair really can turn white from extreme shock or fear.

Hair really is a mysterious thing.

For some reason (don't ask me what!) I thought you were going to say his leg grew back. :P

my hair is just like that. And it hasn't changed, but my mom's was also like that and after she got older and started to cut it very short it has been wavy. I always thought maybe it was because short hair can do that with time.

now why am I posting in the UK thread? :P
