Fortunately, you do not have a US immigration problem.  Easy peasy to travel and return with AP.  Easy peasy to get a CRBA and US passport for your child.

The biggest potential problem is how you will pay for delivery in Canada.  Your US health insurance may not cover the delivery in Canada.  You may not be entitled to government healthcare in Canada since you no longer reside there.  If you deliver in Canada, you may have to pay for it out of your own pockets.

You lost Canadian health care the minute you had your visa endorsed at the border. Not only that but to regain Canadian health care there is a minimum amount of residency required to get it back. I think that is 3 months for most provinces.

There is a small chance your US insurance will pay for your birth in Canada. Ours would pay as a out of network charge and that alone was a crazy price. I'm not sure how they come up with the pricing but it sure didn't match Canadian prices.

If you can afford it I would do it. I'm not a fan  childbirth in the US.

Yeah the requirement even applies when moving within Canada. My sister recently moved from BC to Quebec and got sick but couldn't go to a GP after 2.5 months of living there. So for sure if you come back after being abroad the waiting period will apply as well

I don’t think my particular insurance would pay for it at all but I’m looking into what I be paying out of pocket. Can I ask why you’re not a fan of child birth in the US??

It is EXTREMELY expensive. As is literally everything else when it comes to healthcare in America. Anyway I'm Canadian too and you definitely do not have healthcare anymore.

I found they treat you more like a number and push for interventions when not needed. My doctors were amazing and knew better to push to have me induced. Every single woman in there had their induction dates set. Still the doctors and nurses treat you like you're a walking time bomb.  All ready to cut you open and lord help you if you tell them no you will not be getting induced.

I had 4 births in Canada and 2 here and the backwards town with a doctor shortage in Canada was way better then the big city hospital in Arkansas.  I'm sure if I never had a child in Canada I probably would have thought how great they were here. But I found them lacking in care and help for new moms anything before going home.

Expensive. Extremely medical intervention driven. Compared to other first world countries .. a much higher mother/ infant mortality rate .. C-sections plus plus plus

With $$

Just FYI, 19 years ago my C-section cost $17k.  And that was for a uncomplicated one with a healthy baby.  I had great insurance at the time, and as I was a staff RN at the hospital where I delivered, the rest was free.

The cost would undoubtedly be even greater now.

I will most definitely look into the cost of everything before deciding on anything. Thank you.

This kind of speaks for itself though.

Sadly this is not an Arkansas only issue.

Oh god, reading this thread makes me terrified...yesterday I was discussing this with a pregnant colleague, who’s 42...she told me that as I’ll be 35 or older (I’m 34 now), I’d count as a ‘geriatric mum’ and so need to be induced early (in addition to being a type 1 diabetic!)...but she also said it’s not bad being a geriatric mum, as the NHS (our free health service) really take care of you and she was having scans almost every week, etc...

I was thinking yep, I’m sure they’ll take amazing care of a diabetic, geriatric mum in the US...for a cost. 😫😫😫

They do not induce based on maternal age alone.  There are many parameters that go into medical decision-making.  Diabetes in pregnancy would be a huge factor.

Y'all need to marry Aussies and get residency here instead. I had an emergency c-section, spent 10 days in hospital. No insurance and no bill. I want to come back here when we have more kids. Hubby doesnt want to live in Australia though :(

In saying that, I did have good care in Washington state when I was there for the first 20 weeks under my husbands health insurance.

I guess, all we want are heathy little bubbas!
