I entered the US on May 23rd and had IR-1 stamped in my passport. When I filed I asked for a SSN to be sent out to my US address. I haven't received my Green Card or SSN yet (I know it's too soon) but I've been offered a job and they want me to start as soon as possible. It's a great opportunity and I don't want to pass it up but I'm not sure if I can legally work yet.

Does anyone know what my options are?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You need an SSN to work, or at least proof you've applied for it. A receipt of SSN application can be used if you can provide the SSN within 90 days. Doesn't the IR-1 become a green card upon entry, basically? I'm not sure so I can't answer the part about not having the actual card.

You should be able to work. If you dont have your gc or ssn yet, just show them the documentation you do have and then update them with your SSN and GC when you receive it.

i came in on a cr-1, and too checked off the box, but the SSn card did not arrive as it was suppose to. I just went to the local SSn office with passport for ID purposes and because the visa was in it, and in a week I had the SSN mailed to me!! http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf I filled the form out at home to speed up the process once at the office!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Thanks. I think I'll wait for another week or so to see if my SSN comes through, and if not, I'll go to my local office.

My husband just arrived on June 3rd, and started work yesterday, June 7th. We explained to the employer that the SSN would arrive in 3 weeks and we would show proof when it arrived. Then he just showed the stamp in the passport and he's a working man!!!

Good luck!

Thanks. I think I'll wait for another week or so to see if my SSN comes through, and if not, I'll go to my local office.
