Hi,

My husband and I both live in Australia, and I'm the US citizen.  We are waiting for his interview to be scheduled, and in the meanttime, I want to open a bank account in the US to be prepared to transfer money to.  Unfortunately, we aren't planning any trips to the mainland US until the visa is hopefully approved.  We are going on a vacation to Hawaii soon but I notice there are no major US bank branches there to open an account.  has anyone had any luck setting up a US bank account online from overseas?  I suppose I can just open one when I get there and use my Australian accounts until I get it sorted, but wanted to get it going to help establish my domicile.  Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

Are you military? If you are, you can go with USAA. They can open accounts over the phone but you have to be military.

My husband (USC) and I (Aussie) are both in Australia and we are planning on opening up a joint one, which we can do whilst we are here. We just have to phone a special number to get it as we currently have accounts with them just not joint.

If you arent military and there is no other option .. I'd just use your aussie accounts.

edit:

there are other ways in which you can establish domicile.
Job searches/interviews, enrollment inquiries for schools if you have kids etc,

You can open an account with HSBC Bank Australia: https://www.hsbc.com.au/accounts/ Before you move to the US, you open an account with HSBC Bank USA: "Our qualified staff at the International Banking Centre can arrange to open overseas HSBC accounts for you before you leave Australia. Just contact your HSBC Premier Relationship Manager in plenty of time before your departure." "If you are relocating to one of the many countries where HSBC has a retail presence, we may be able to make the account opening process easier. Let us help make the transition less stressful. You can use your HSBC relationship to access our International Banking Centre and receive global support." https://www.hsbc.com.au/international/moving-overseas/
