Hey all,

I have been looking around VJ and have not seen the question asked for Canadians. I just received US citizenship, so I am a dual US/Canadian citizen. Will I lose my US Citizenship if I register to vote in Canada?

Very interesting... might note to add, for expats of many countries, their right to vote in home country may be removed whilst residing overseas... even if they retain dual citizenship.. here for example, 3 yrs out of country and I lose my right to vote.

edit... we also have obligations to vote, if I don’t, whilst out of the country during that 3 years, I’ll be fined $900 and have my driver licence suspended 😂😂

No but check how long you are allowed to vote after leaving the country for good. The UK is generous with 13 years. Other countries, less so.

The legal term is denaturalization. It is very rare to lose citizenship. You would have needed to lie on your immigration /naturalization applications or refuse to testify to Congress. (You are not a Guliani associate are you?:))

Dual citizenship and privileges is between you and Ottowa.

You’re allowed to vote via international ballot. You’re only permitted to vote in Federal elections, based on your last known address in Canada to vote in your last rideing. Consult the Elections Canada site to submit the proper paper work. I just voted in the last election from Florida. Good luck!

Until very recently it was five years (except in some special circumstances), but the law was changed *and* the old law was ruled unconstitutional this year. Canadian citizens living abroad can vote in federal elections (only federal election, not provincial, territorial or local elections) indefinitely as long as they have lived in Canada at some point in their life.

It is too late to request an absentee ballot for this year, however. The only way to vote for OP at this point would be to physically go to Canada to cast a ballot.

No US consequences; however, we were shocked how slow US mail is to Canada for express.  We had to spend $50+ to get my partner's ballot to Ottawa in time.

I got paranoid so I mailed my ballot back in September, the day after I got it.

Same here. Depends where you live, but I find mail from Florida to Ontario takes about 10-12 days usually, which is why I sent my ballot so early via regular mail to save $50+ on express
