Plus, paying for today's children to be educated is in YOUR best interests too. Also, in some states (past a certain age) you can get some of the school money knocked off your property taxes.

depends on where you live

Yes, I believe the "in some states" part of my post covered that.

it's the (past a certain age) that is the issue.

at what age ... 65? or 67.5 (depending B. Boomer status)? Then you're retired and other factors kick in.

nice tax break for everyone.

Clearly you can't please everyone at the same time but speaking personally I think it's incredibly selfish to resent having to pay for everyone to receive a free public education. Free schooling is what makes good countries great. Just look at some of the crappiest countries on the planet...they usually have something in common. No free schools. If you want to turn America into a third-world country, by all means scrap free school.

Before we go too deep, please read post #142.

I’m also “state school scum” and didn’t have the advantage of a “private institution” in regards to education. I’m also not a product of TX ISD’s, but of another state and their tax/ educational system. I also have a huge tax burden and assist in educating other peoples children (I don't have children).

Do I complain … no. I’m happy to be doing my part and have personally helped children who needed a little extra attention because it benefits all and I love to help make a difference.

Do I want to give my time, money, etc. to an illegal? No .. sorry h_ll no !! (But that’s another thread). :P

what an interesting debate

it really shows how much so many societies have changed from communal to individual. It used to take a village to raise a child; in many neighborhoods children were considered the product of everyone. In southern black culture, if you did something stupid, you got clocked by the adult who caught you (who you called by Mr or Ms and their last name) AND you got clocked by your parents when they sent your butt home. All the adults (whether childless or not) had a hand in the raising of you, therefore you had not just one set of parents but a whole gaggle. And I know this is true in other cultures as well. But now with the contraction of the family unit to the nuclear people are more isolated; parents are more stressed because they and only they are responsible for their child. They can't send Junior or Juniette down the street to an aunt's when they've had enough.

try this in today’s society. I hope you have a good lawyer.

yeah, it's true! you can breathe on someone too hard and get sued these days. ridiculous.

Woo, I'm public school scum too.

I agree with you on illegals clogging up the system. It's a massive burden, especially when you consider how many of them qualify for free meals and how expensive it is to implement the colossal failure that is called "bilingual education".

I teach in the public school system. I also have had to teach illegal immigrants children at some point and I didn't have a choice. So I keep the public school scum going by virtue of my job, is that the view here? I'm not happy that so many illegals place their children in our schools but we cannot turn them away. My tax dollars go to pay for the educating of these children, who to be quite honest, had no choice in being here. It's the parents that brought them...I had one child, from Guatemala, who wanted to go home. Home to Guatemala.

We could also touch on "public" roads, "public" libraries, anything "public" that doesn't charge a fee but gets its operating money from our tax dollars. Does that apply here as well?

You do realise that the usage of the word "scum" will most likely start an all out war of words?

Well, as I've said before...this is getting nowhere. Everyone has their own opinion, that's the beauty of America. As long as I pay my bills, pay for my daughter's upkeep, pay my taxes (which do go to fund public schools), and don't ask for any handouts, I will still be of the opinion that my daughter is my business. Argue with me all you want on this...I stand by what I say.
okay, I'll play too ... just for discussion & fun ... here goes:

so ... me as a childless adult, who pays taxes ... definitely school taxes as part of it ... at an equal rate to you ... what is my benefit to educate your daughter? I'd like to see my taxes reduced because I am less of a burden on social services than you are.

You might be right now but that will change unless you kick the bucket in a timely fashion. Somebody's gotta take care of you when you get old, my friend. Your kids won't help you seeing that you don't have any. We kind of gotta keep them coming unless we'd like to be a nation of retirees in the near future.

If you'd read the entire post instead of just picking on reasons to attack ME, you'd have seen that Natty referred to him/herself as state school scum first.

You are looking for reasons to be needlessly defensive and I'm sick of you picking on me. I vote Democrat, support public education and services, and you are dead wrong to imply otherwise.

Gonna have to try harder than that to blame me. I wasn't referring to YOU at all. I just happened to quote all of what was posted. Get over yourself darlin. I don't deliberately PICK on YOU, I happen to be a lot more mature than that. I just happen to express my opinion....and if you don't like it, put me on ignore!

Guys …

I was picking on myself (and also stating I'm publicly educated and a beneficiary of such) and meant no offense to anyone. I grew up in an affluent area with private schools in abundance. All the public educated kids were called …. SSS … and I can’t print what the private school educated ones were called without getting TOS’d.

KarenCee … no insult was intended to you, your profession, or where you teach. Teachers are good things … even if they always gave me too much homework. (F)

No offense was taken...not by me at least. :) As for the homework...I hated it too. ;)
