I could be wrong, but the only time I've seen the priest wave the incense holder is at a funeral!

This thread should die! But I jest. Really it's been great fun.

And where exactly did I say that I get an attitude and ask anyone anything?
You did not say " I have an attitude", but where I draw my conclusion is you say that you get offended every time someone tries to give you anything you did not solicit.

Where did I say that I am offended by solicitors? I just don't care for them or for what they do. That ain't the same thing. I won't let solicitors offend me. Ain't worth it.

I am not sure since I have not been around the incense thing during my life, but I'm pretty sure in some orthodox churches they use it during the service. Not just at funerals.

ah, hehe... ok...

I seem to remember him waving it around during the mass at my gran's church....but nevermind...wasn't meant to cause offense.... just cracked me up.

BTW Stina, meant to say...that picture by your sis-in-law is beautiful! Thanks for enlarging it earlier in the thread.:yes:

 oh dear... LOL

Roman Catholics use it -- fundamentalists hate it because it is a "human invention", though apparently the King James version of the bible is not.

I just like the smilie...:lol:

At our church, which is Lutheran, we use incense at our Evening Prayer service. The incense is a symbol of our prayers, as in Psalm 141:2:

"May my prayer be set before you like incense;

may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice."

Hmmmmm I dunno maybe. I don't recall any near as blatant as some I've seen toward Christians....I could be wrong, for sure...but it's not a case of not wanting to SEE it...I really haven't. Then again, like I said...I've only been following this the last while, not all the way through as well. There have been some PRETTY nasty remarks toward Christians here, tho, I have seen that for SURE.

edited to add tho..I guess I can only speak for myself. I would never do that to someone for their beliefs..no matter what they were. If it has happened, I would include those people in the comment, for sure..it's just not necessary. M.

I personally can't think of anything more insulting than saying someone is a bad or immoral person because they don't believe the same thing as you.

Christians believe they should "spread the word"

Non-believers of Christianity, who have made up their mind to either believe in something else or nothing at all, don't want to hear "the word"

That is the crux of the problem. Period. It's never going to be solved.

Just catching up here after homework...

Jenn, you've very right about that. It would be insulting. As I've highlighted above, I can only speak/act for myself...and I would never tell someone they are indecent or immoral for how they believe. Of course!!! people can still be moral, and not be Christian, etc. or any religion for that matter. I disagree with Incanada, or whoever it was that said they can't. I would be insulted too in that respect.

Frances, some Christians are different to others. I have definitely experience the type you talk of for myself. Most of us have had Jehovah's Witnesses come to our home, and not really wanted to hear it. (NO OFFENSE to anyone who is..just stating an example of some who feel they are meant to 'spread the word')

Personally, the way I was raised by my parents(and am not actively living their lifestyle, but believe much of it), as I PM'd you back, is that they live their lives in a manner befitting how they think they should be(as far as how God would want them to) and if anyone sees a difference in them from the way a lot of other people around them are living, and chose to ask them about the choice they made to live that way, and why..then they tell them. If at any point they become disinterested, or don't want to hear anymore, you be quiet about it. My parents taught me that (and again, this is only for people that believe in Christianity that I'm referring to this:)God wants us to WANT to serve him, not to only feel obligated to, or we SHOULD be doing this, so we are, etc. It only follows that if you insist to someone that they need to follow God,etc and they decided to actually do that ONLY because of what you said and not because they themselves wanted to, it would be pretty meaningless to Him. Again, just stating how *I* was taught. In short, never to force it upon someone, but only share your views if they're asked about, or the conversation naturally comes around to it, and to back off if the person isn't receptive. That's the way I've always been in my own life, and back when I lived at home, etc. I DID have people from school, etc ask me about it all the time. When they were 'done' hearing it, I was done saying it. I think much of what is being said here is because...well, there's a thread about it! It's not like any Christian here just PM'd you out of the blue to shove it down your throat and go hey! YOU! You should be living THIS way, blah blah...ya know? Just my thoughts. (F) M.

Aww man I told myself I should just stay out of this thread. LoL ... I hope in the past few pages that I did post that I didn't offend anyone, that wasn't my intention. I just want to make a small comment about a few things. One, there have been a few people in here stating that they don't want to hear the word, they don't want to hear this, blah blah blah, well essentially most of this thread has been a religious debate. If you don't really want to hear it then why are they continually posting in here?

Also, just a question for the fellow christians in this room. How are we suppose to leave God out of things? I jsut don't understand that, I want to try too, but I don't. God is suppose to be apart of every aspect of our lives, we are suppose to "die" to ourselves and allow him to live in us. Yes we are all human, and alot of us screw up, and we're not perfect in telling people about God. Maybe the problem really is that some of us should just stop spouting at the mouth all the time (my own father as an example) and in stead of just talking the talk, we need to start walking the walk! I would never ask anyone or tell anyone to believe in something or do something that I wouldn't be doing myself. I am still learning, growing in God daily. And yes that is my "personal" decision. But that decision is what governs my entire life, my being. God is not a genie also, we just can't "Sit" back and wait for God to do something. Half the time he's probably sitting back waiting for us to do something. I believe God works through people, human beings, of all kinds. Just look at all the people he used in the Bible. Were they all high up in the food chain? were they all perfect? no, Judas sold him out, Peter denied him, Moses didn't want to listen, nor did Jonah. Yet God still worked through those human beings. The power of his nature no matter what they did. They were all willing to step up to the plate though at many times they probably made the faith in Christ look bad. Maybe even worse because some of them actually lived side by side with Jesus and yet they still struggled! Many people were witnesses and followers to his miracles and teachings and some still didn't believe! Thats all I wanted to say, I don't want to offend anyone, was just trying to look at it from a different angle is all.
