Wow. Was it missing just 1 digit or was it completely different?

I assume they didn't charge your credit card for the I-485 fee.

It was missing the 3rd from last digit entirely, and yeah, they didn't charge me any fees for the rejected petition.

Further update: I've been unable to get a drivers license or SSN due to both the DMV and SSA being able to verify my lawful presence on SAVE. USCIS scheduled an urgent InfoPass appointment today, so hopefully they can get to the bottom of some of this...

USCIS have now confirmed the A Number on the I-797 is correct and there's been a typographical error on my visa, and that the incorrect A Number was the reason for the delay and rejection. I'm going to re-file tomorrow :)

Also, consider using Fedex or UPS instead USPS. Having checked the timelines of those who used either of the  mentioned private couriers to USPS, they seem to get NOA1 quicker than people that used USPS.That's just my conclusion though.

I very much suspect that's just small sample size randomness or confirmation bias at play.

We used USPS and did not have any unusual delays; NOA1 date was within a week of sending.

Another update: Got confirmation from USCIS in San Antonio to confirm my status and that the issues won't cause me any imminent problems while they're processing the AOS. They've said to wait for the receipt letter and request an expedite to avoid any further complications.

"Small sample size randomness", got it! But " confirmation bias at play" ? come on, tone that down Dave, I don't care about which mail service delivers what, I  just stated my view base on my experience and findings which does not have to be the same with yours. The main purpose of giving our two cents here is to help the next and future filers to navigate their journeys smoothly.

Confirmation bias just means you had an idea of what the answer was going to be and paid more attention to to data that confirmed it. It doesn't mean you actually had a personal stake in the outcome or even cared much about what that outcome was. And suggesting it may have affected you is just saying you're human, it's not an insult.

As a follow up, we got a response today to our request to expedite based on a USCIS error, and were told we should get a decision or further notice of other action within 120 days!

Given both my bank and health insurance provider are now telling me I need to provide them with an SSN / ITIN soon, I'm glad there's a much shorter time boundary on it. I can't afford to lose these...

Another road bump. I've just got a letter from my health insurance company saying they need an SSN / ITIN as part of the changes to the ACA or they may have to cancel my insurance.

SSA has now rejected my request for an SSN because my I-94 expires in less than 14 days, even though we provided it earlier, and because the A Number on my I-797C doesn't match the one in my passport.

The IRS says I can't apply for an ITIN because I'm eligible for an SSN, but the SSA says I'm not eligible for an SSN. Am I just stuck in a bureaucratic catch-22?

Hi. I see nothing in that letter that states you will be denied coverage. You cannot give them what you do not have.

The law requires that they may ask. And they may ask several times to cover their 'butts' so to speak, but that does not prevent you from obtaining or holding coverage. As long as they make a ''good faith'' effort to obtain, it doesn't matter how many times they ask. You don't have to give it out, and you can't because you can't get one yet. You can't get an SSN because for whatever reason you waited too long to obtain one. You'll need to wait until your EAD arrives, if you filed one.

This this little explaination here:

Quote

What is reported under Section 6055?

Among other things, names and Social Security numbers of all individuals receiving minimum essential coverage, including any spouses and/or dependents receiving coverage, must be reported. Social Security numbers of spouses and dependents not receiving coverage do not need to be reported.

If the plan sponsor cannot obtain a covered individual’s Social Security number, that person’s date of birth may be used instead, as long as the reporting entity demonstrates that it properly solicited the TIN but did not receive it. A plan sponsor should make a good-faith effort in order to avoid penalties for incomplete or incorrect reporting. https://blog.ifebp.org/index.php/still-trying-to-get-social-security-numbers-for-aca-reporting

Fantastic! That helps a lot. I got told on the phone when contacting them that they needed it or I may lose coverage. I'll go back to them with this and see what they say.
