As others said this is just wrong. Neither are needed to add a spouse to insurance. Insurance companies have work around numbers they can use. When the spouse gets a SSN then it can be added and the work around number be removed.

Ok great 👍 give your advice on documents he can use not your useless opinion on what I said

Woooow never knew an employer could make a fake social security number to give to the government 😳that’s interesting. However I didn’t do any of this. I added my spouse as my beneficiary and uscis accepted the documents but nice to know you can get fake social security numbers

😂 it wasn’t a fake SS # it’s good to know you didn’t have to have any of it, but I wanted my hubby covered. We are older and he takes  medications. Glad my company did not give us flack, but I do work for them lol  He has EAD, AP and SS# and interview is in 11 days!!

To clarify, normally they use a placeholder SSN that represents the lack of one (since some electronic systems may not permit it). This is a number in their system that is then excluded from mandatory reporting requirements that typical individuals are subject to. If/when an SSN is provided later, they can still maintain the account holder's entire history.

I kept calling and they finally added her “pending SS”

They CAN do it and your spouse IS eligible.
Newborns are added like that all the time and it takes weeks for them to receive a SS number.

In the meantime an ITIN is one option until the SS card is received.

I have called them again this morning and first they told me that they cant do it. I was convinced them that federal law does not require SSN to add coverage. They then asked whether she is in US and then override the system to add my wife in. Finally got it through. Thanks
