Ah. But this is who we are. We're the country that took in persecuted migrants from Europe.

Irrelevant to this discussion.  This policy does not apply to asylees.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

One thing I want to say about the The New Colossus poem on the Statue of Liberty. It was written in a time when America had instituted slavery. Which was then followed by segregation and civil rights wars (including women's rights).

To me, that is the ultimate sign of hypocrisy. So it is absolutely no surprise that the Sonnet Poem holds no water.

America has been "like this" for centuries.

You know better. We just let them live their lives. But we didn't ask them for a health policy at Ellis Island.

So, we should just open the borders?

The point of the American experiment isn't that we're perfect: It's that we're constantly moving towards a more perfect Union. That the arc bends towards justice. That long-run trend will continue, despite short-term hiccups like the last 3 years. The sonnet holds.

You can't see any middle ground between mean policies and open borders?

So it is mean to require people to have health insurance? Somebody need to have told Obama that.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

How is having the immigrant get healthcare mean ?
Maybe I am lost in the political debate.
I am not sure what I am not understanding here.
I have healthcare as a US Citizen and have spent thousands to cover myself and children.
So being “nice” would be letting my soon to be husband go without and risk him and myself (god forbid) a half million dollars in medical costs?
That is what I would find mean and letting him fend for himself.

Ryan just now has his visa and I’d be darned that I’d start our life with “what ifs” and a big fat bill because I didn’t add him.

Healthcare is a mess here. I’d not advise not covering someone coming here.

What am I missing here ?
Im not rich but theres no way he’s not getting healthcare. I’ve seen to much heartache over people not being covered.

Just a bit lost by the comment.

Look, we've seen this movie before. America prides itself as a nation of immigrants, but when the demographics of the immigrant change, sentiment towards immigration changes too. The waves of immigration of southern Europeans/Irish and of Asians in the last century and some saw similar backlash from the majority, and restrictive policies followed. Now it's mainly brown people from the South. This too, shall pass.

This thread is about Healthcare.

Reality =  Change affects people. Many people do not like change.

Change will always benefits some and not benefit others. For example, at the turn to the 19th century the main forms of transportation was horse drawn carriages and trains. When cars came out people in the horse drawn carriage felt it was a threat. But look what the automotive industry did for certain markets like Detroit for a while. It created a new industry.

Point being is that with time, things change and some suffer as a result and others don't. It is the way it has always been.

Really? It's about immigration restriction under the guise of "healthcare" and "self-sufficiency."

Nice try, though.

I know, right? Same thing I thought when I read those words from the White House statement.

No, you are spinning..........this policy protects the US tax payer as well as the immigrant....don't you think the US taxpayer and immigrant should be protected?
