@Boiler She is 59 and was a teacher all her life. If she finds a job here, its good. She wants to work at least 5 years. For long term, I am going to support her. By the way, my household income is 80000 with 4 family members.

So probably not in teaching, so depends what job she can get which has benefits.

If you end up paying that will take a big chunk out of your net income, obviously everybody has different life styles. Some are prepared to make bigger sacrifices than others.

You can not obtain a tax credit, obviously you need an income to benefit from a tax credit.

I have income ...above 150% but below 400% so I qualify for PTC according to current rules ..reducing the monthly premium to $100 per month.

If i was a new immigrant arriving after Nov4 the PTC would not be allowed and the full premium of 1200 per month applies. My post was pointing out an actual premium example from personal current experience

Exactly, being only child, I will make sacrifices. But can you tell for how many years of advance health insurance the immigration officer will want?

No.

I assume they will expect her to show what your plan is to provide for her needs, and I assume you have gone through the numbers so at the moment I would go with that. Spreadsheet everything.

We are discussing and making sure we get the right one as I am typing this... but how about I-130 package... do I have to buy insurance right now to include them in I-130 package or I can provide it in later stages?

The interview, not the petition, is where the public charge determination is made.

Everything I have read seems to imply that non-subsidized exchange plans are perfectly acceptable.

To be honest, this is very vague. Will I show my income or will it be TOTALLY onto her savings or property? Or will it be a combination of everything

Combination of everything

A lot of legal sites are recommending short term travel insurance followed by permanent enrollment before the short term policy expires.

That is worrying.

Recommending this for K1’s and initial entrants without SS numbers

That travel insurance isn’t worth the paper it’s written on in most cases.

Generally Travel Insurance does not cover those migrating.

Can you please give some links for these legal sites or PM them if links are not allowed.

I have an interview coming up in a month and looking to figure out solutions to this new hurdle.

Thank you!

I’m not certain how much a immigration officer will want to see proof of but insurance is paid monthly and if you’re on exchange it will have you pay the first month premium in advance. At that point, she will be actively enrolled.
It is a yearly automatic renewal unless you sign on to the site and cancel or pick a plan that better suites her needs.
You may find a better plan and make a new selection at that time or open enrollment.
Hope that helps.
Really you can only show a year at a time.

Hello Everyone,

I have read most of your comments but still don’t have answers to the below questions.

1. Besides employer based insurance, I see the only two other insurance that a spouse can get is catastrophic or short term plans. I think travel insurance is NOT included. Can you fellow VJers confirm this?

2. Would you know on average how much catastrophic or short term premiums run monthly?

On a philosophical level I think it makes sense to require some level of health coverage...but given the currently terrible logistics of the U.S. Healthcare system, unless the list can be amended to include "effort to obtain health coverage", this has the potential of being a nightmare.

Travel insurance does not typically cover those migrating, so is a no-go. And speaking from experience, it's an extremely lengthy, slow, ridiculous process trying to buy regular health insurance, especially without an SSN. I tried to buy health insurance for my then-fiance so he'd be covered immediately upon arrival (his arrival time also just happened to be during annual enrollment period)...I called all 6 providers in my state, only one of them (Regence, for around $400/month) agreed to cover him without an SSN + on a short term basis. I had arranged this 2 months in advance of his arrival... but never actually received any of the official paperwork, bills, cards, etc. until nearly 5 MONTHS after the application had been sent in/approved. I had been following up on a weekly basis and was repeatedly told "sorry, we're really busy because of the open enrollment period, please be patient". Of course, 5 months in we were married and he'd been added to my health insurance...

That is because no one can answer that question for you. It can range from 100 dollars a month to 3500 a month.
I still have to research my plan every year as they change as well.
It’s going to depend on what you want your co pays to be, a hmo, a ppo, your deductibles, your Max out of pocket, co-insurance, etc.

The list can go on. I would do some research on some of the basic terms for US insurance and than start some research.
There are hundreds of plans and all dependent on what you are looking for.
