May God have mercy on your soul.

I am still waiting on your supposed source of this quote because he NEVER said it. It was made up by either salon or Vox and people ran with it.

I'm really not an expert, but the way I understand it, K-1's are non-immigrant anyway. So I don't know that this will technically apply to them because they are coming on a K-1 Visa not an immigrant Visa.

That's a good point!  Yes, the K1 is a non immigrant, and until they have their AOS approved, I would think they stay as a non immigrant until which time their "Adjustment of Status" is approved.

And I thought when he wrote the word "NEVER" that big multiple times, I'd thought that he actually had a conversation with Kenny and received an answer "I've never said that"

You're saying they can only get certain plans but not others. You're supporting their exclusion from some of the commonest plans we have access to. What's next -- require them to wear a gold star?

Huh?  Reactionary much?  No one is saying that.  Hell, I support single payer medicare for all!

Health care and the cost to retire in the United States are HUGELY expensive.  So much so that it sometimes keeps me awake at night, and I have excellent health care and I'm ahead of the retirement game for my age.  I am fully aware of my own white privilege; I realize I'm lucky to have had the resources I've had, and that as a result, my husband is much better off than many immigrants.

I simply think that since those costs are large, and impact the public charge issue maybe more than any other, US citizens and LPRs who want to sponsor immigrants should be required to plan accordingly.

Obviously, it won't be as much of an issue for working-age adults.  The larger impact is for those bringing elderly parents over.

Ok, I've read all 18 pages of this thread and perhaps I am missing something but I just want to double check...

I have my AOS interview in less than three weeks - October 22nd - currently I do not have insurance. When I entered the US I had travel insurance for 90 days, as this was supposed to be a visit for less than 90 days, per the VWP. I ended up staying and filing AOS

My husband and I have been married for 11 months, I entered the country almost six months ago, so I have been without coverage for the last 2.5 months. I have a job lined up once I receive my green card but I had been planning to be added to my husband's insurance once I had an SSN. I'm not sure whether he could add me outside of open enrolment as we have been married too long for that to qualify as a life change, and I have been in the country for too long for that to qualify for a life change.

I recognise that it is irresponsible for me to be uninsured, I guess coming from the UK I perhaps underestimate just how irresponsible. I've never had health insurance.

So, first of all - does this proclamation affect my AOS

Second - does anyone know if I will be able to be added to my husband's insurance outside of open enrolment, based on these circumstances?

In any case this thread has made me rethink the decision to wait for insurance and we will resolve that situation one way or another.

Thank you.

I just don't understand not having health insurance.  Would you drive without having auto insurance?  What would you do if you needed an appendectomy tonight?  Even without insurance, you would still be responsible for the cost.

I know she can be added to my plan. But does the US consulate recognize that and then would the insurance requirement be satisfied. That's what I'm ultimately getting at.

Why would they not?  Many workplace plans are far superior to plans you can purchase independently.

Does anyone know if this will affect people who already have the visa the approved, but have not yet moved back to the USA?  I'm planning on moving back around mid-November with my wife, who recently got her Immigrant Visa approved.   Will she be asked by immigration officials in the USA for proof of insurance?  She doesn't at this time.

Our plan all along was for her to start work a month or two after she arrived in the USA and get insurance in that fashion.   I could also pay for it, but have no plans in place for that yet of course.  I've been more-or-less blindsided by this.

So how much do you think is the cost of health insurance on the individual market and they are no banned from using Obamacare?  How much would it cost some to bring thier parent/s? This is just a round about way to reduce/eliminate green cards for the parents.
