It probably won't be that bad if I can add by wife to my employer sponsored plan (no SS) come open enrollment period. However, I'd be in a pickle if they don't allow me to add her without a SS number.

Immigration is not a qualifying life event for adding someone to your insurance https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/qualifying-life-event/

I think they ought to fix that before making such changes. However, the government isn't known for making logical decisions.

Becoming a citizen or LPR is an event qualifying for special

enrolment period .. while it’s not listed in the page of the link you gave , it is identified if you do the quick check on SEP eligibility. We enrolled in ACA marketplace in SEP for this reason

Changes in household:

  1. Getting married or divorced
  2. Having a baby or adopting a child
  3. Death in the family

I got married in January 2019. Still waiting for the i130 Nebraska nightmare to be over. Who know when she'll be here. Early next year, late next, 2021. God bless the current administration. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

Her coming here would not be categorized as change in household.

Becoming an LPR is identified if you  do the  quick quiz. We took out ACA under this rule for qualifying events for SEP

It would have been reasonable (for obvious reason) only if US healthcare had not been a complete scam. Not single one person here should kid themselves this has anything to do with protecting tax payers, this is entirely targeted towards family based immigration and DV immigrants and can effectively (depending on interpretation) kill it without any new immigration laws - which has been a goal of this administration for long time.

It is also hysterical to see Trump supporters saying "everyone should have healthcare" while they were blasting Obama for effectively doing exactly that. There is no difference between legal immigrants and US born citizens with no insurance being a burden. Both are just that - a burden.

Now this is a true comment. Funny thing is people think the rule was made with a purpose to protect immigrants (yes it does, who does not want to be insured), but the main bottom line purpose of the rule is to bar poor people who can't afford pricey US health insurance from getting visa. Did not the acting director Ken not too long ago say

The administrative looks like nothing but a circus to me.

How exactly would this work for couples that live overseas and will be returning to the US with no immediate employment?

Our plan was always to purchase private insurance for a few months until we both had jobs that provided healthcare plans. If I'm reading this right, whatever plan we purchase has to be for at least a minimum of 364 days - is that correct?

And, as far as I can tell, we simply have to show we have the intention to have this arranged within the first 30 days?

You can purchase all types of medical cover when booking your flight... depends on how well you want to be covered... I’d recommend basic health with emergency care ambulance added... unless you plan on going the gp a lot.. choice is yours

you can’t work until gc arrives..so something like holiday coverage or similar should cover you. so take it out for a few months which gives you time to get on an employment policy

If you are entering on an immigrant visa such as this poster ..  you are authorised to work immediately ., no need to wait for the actual GC, the stamp on the visa done at POE is the temporary GC

Who cares about this policy, it only affects poor people.

Poor people don’t deserve to be with their loved ones anyway. Poor people shouldn’t have the right to a family life if they can’t afford it.

My taxes shouldn’t be going to help those less fortunate. I’m sure glad that half my taxes go on defense and fixing the darn PA roads!

More barriers and blockades on the poor please!
